Neither - there is a tensioning pulley.
You must loosen the pulley (counterclockwise) enough for the belt to be removed.

CLICK HERE to see the exact steps based on your engine's configuration.
the 129 is at the very bottom of the page.

Tensioning pulley is #1 pulley on the diagram

How to replace alternator belt for 1984 Mercedes 190E.

Loosen the bolts underside of alternator and then loosen the tension arm alongside the alternator. After replacing the belt, use a piece of wood a suitable length and size to re-tension the belt whilst tightening the tension arm then tighten the lower bolts.

Ive got an alternator belt on a 1978 mercedes 450sl and the belt needs to go on the inside pully whats the easiest way. wrayturner@comcast.net

The only way to replace an alternator drive belt that is on an inside pulley is to remove the outer belts before the inner one can be fitted.
To fit inner belt, loosen the adjusting clamp and mounting bolts on the units that tension the outer belts such as the aircon compressor and power steering units and moove them to loosen the belts and then remove these belts. Once these belts are off, check them for wear and cracking of the rubber on the inside surface and if suspect it would pay to replace them as well. Loosen clamp and mounting bolts on the alternator, if not already done so, and moove alternator so that alternator belt can be fitted.
Retension alternator belt and tighten clsmping and mounting bolts Refit other belts in turn and tension and tighten clamping and mounting bolts.
Correct tension is when belt is pushed on the longest run between pulleys with a 10 Kg force. Belt should deflect a maximum of 8 mm.

What bolts need to be loosened to remove and replace alternator belt for 1983 mercedes 240D

Normally, you would loosen the bolts on the alternator and move it away from the direction of the belt. When you retighten it, don't over do it. Too tight a belt will wreck your alternator's bearings. Should be able to deflect the belt midway between pulleys about 3/4 inch. There should be a bolt that is easy to loosen on the top and one on the bottom that will teach you some new words.

How to fit fan belt for mercedes 250 deisel

1- Loosen the Tension Lock Nut between the power steering pulley and water pump pulley first. This is important. Otherwise, it will cost you more to replace the tension nut kit. 2- Loosen the Tension Nut next. 3- There are 2 bolts to hold the alternator on to the engine bracket, Loose the top one while remove the bottom one. Use the top one as a pivot point to move the alternator to get the belt out and in. 4- After put the new belt in, follow the reverse order. Have fun in a hand-on job.

I have a 1987 Mercedes 420 SL and in the last week when i start the car you get a screeching noise when you drive away, Thanks

that could be a belt problem. check each belt that you have for loose tension and worn out belt. check also for frozen ac clutch. or adjuster pulley or alternator bearings.

tnx 4 using fixya.
