Hi
I am assuming this is a manual transmission, it sounds like either 2 things
first the gearbox could be low on fluid, the reverse gear is slightly higher than the rest of the gears so may not be getting enough oil to it.
secondly it could be the thrust bearing on it's way out, although it could make that noise for another 2 years before anything finally gives, as you dont use reverse as much as the other gears.
I would get the gearbox oil checked out and also have the 4 wheel drive inspected, mainly the joints may need regreaseing, very important that 4x4s are kept well oiled, and greased.
Hope this helps, if not get back to me with more details so we can better diagnose.

Dan
Hi
The part is very cheap but to get to it you have to remove the gearbox or at least in part seperate the gearbox from the engine. there is a shaft inside the gearbox that engages the gears, the thrust bearing sits on the shaft to allow movement of the clutch plate.
I would say a decent garge would charge you about £100 labour as it should only take 2 to 4 hours depending on the mechanic doing the work. Firstly though get a second opinion from a mechanic or a garage with a good reputation. always get 2 quotes for any work, and 2 prices for the part also.
It is some times difficult to daignose problems of this sort via the computer so please do get someone to look at it prior to making any arrangements for work to be carried out.
Also get the garage to check the transfer box for oil, grease, the transfer box is what transfers the power to all 4 wheels when in 4wd. again it could just be oil or grease being low making it noisey, so do ask specifically for them to check the oil levels and grease nipples before carrying out any expensive work.
Some garages will try and rip you off if they know its only an easy job, especially if they think you dont know what the fault is. hence get 2 quotes.
Hope this helps
