What is the cable called from shifter to dash

What is the cable called that goes from the column shifter to the dash and it hooks into the indicator that showas what gear you are in?

Shift indicator not working correctly


This is a common concern on explorer, shift indicator cable breaks.if you're the diy type this is a pretty easy repair. Remove steering column cover top and bottom, and instrument bezel.you'll see shifter indicator coming out of bottom of instrument cluster and cable wrapped around steering column, attached to the shifter.you'll have to remove 4 screws for cluster,7mm, tilt the bottom of the cluster and look where indicator is attached, usually 2 7 mm bolts or clips, remove and replace indicator...if the steering column was lowered without taking off indicator cable it would break cable, or could be band that wraps around column that's loose or broken..either way cheap fix..

My 1998 ford explorer shift is funny.


If the shifter is sloppy there is a piece that comes loose but usualy breaks under the dash where the shifter cable hooks up the the sterring column. It is a tube that runs from the shifter handle to the cable. Ford will sell you 2-3 pieces, but first get under there and look for lots of play. It may not even put the trans in park if its really loose. You must remove the whole column to fix it. Hope this helps.

Loose column shifter


Look under dash where steering column is. Find the connection for the shift cable. see if the mount that the cable end connects to is loose. wiggle it. If it is there are 2 torx screws that mount the bracket to the shift tube that you need to tighten. I think they are a T-27 size bit. This is a common problem on fords. easy fix. I usually will take the screws out and use a thread locking compound in them to stop it from happening again.

Put a new engine in a 1998 isuzu rodeo now it won't start. I thought it was the neutral safety switch because the R was on the dash and it was in park


This could be the problem. If your dash indicator is showing reverse but the transmission is in park it could be the safety switch. I'm not talking about the safety switch in the transmission though. In automatics they put a second switch to kill the starter from engaging. You need to adjust the linkage. If your shifter isn't actually on the column but the indicators are there is a cable that attaches the floor shift to the column and that is adjustable. Put the Floor shifter in Park and turn the column section nearest the dash by hand until you find park. Then adjust the cable length as needed. If all you have is the column shift it is still a cable adjustment. Set the emergency brake, drop the shifter to low 1 and adjust the cable linkage by loosening it on the transmission and manually move it all the way to low 1 then tighten it down then move the shifter to park and repeat teh adjustment process to verify that it is properly aligned. Lock the linkage back down and see if the vehicle will start, if it doesn't move the shifter to neutral and try to start the vehicle if the vehicle starts then check the column shift safety switch at the park position to make sure it is still in place and working. Typically, if the vehicle won't start in Park or Neutral it is more likely to be the Transmission neutral safety switch.

if auto on the colomn there is two bolts under steering take loose dont drop yet , dropped down a little you will see a little cable that hooks to the indicator for p-r-n-d-l-l2 it hooks to you steering column . put back in reverse

The shift selector (PRNDL) doesn't work any more in the dash. How do I fix it, and or should I take it in to get it fixed (rather than myself)? This is my daughters truck.This is a 1989 Chevy Silverado...


if i remember right the shifter indicator is hooked to the shifter housing on the column with a small cable remove the lower panels and you should be able to see it, usually it just comes undone

How do I locate the ignition switch and remove it from my gmc sierra 1991 ignition switch


The ignition switch is located on the top of the steering column underneath the dash.

1. Remove the cover panel from under the steering column and you should see the bracket that holds up the steering column, but before you un-bolt the bracket to lower the steering column, you must remove the clip holding the shifter position indicator cable to the column. (put the shifter into drive and you should be able to see the screw that holds the shift indicator cable adjusting clip to the steering column)

2. Remove the bracket holding up the steering column and carefully let the steering column down as far as it will go, the steering wheel will probably be resting on the seat.

3. You should now be able to see the ignition switch on the top of the steering column, and the two mounting bolts. The high beam switch might share the upper ignition switch bolt, and you will then need to remove the high beam switch before you can remove the ignition switch.

4. Remove the ignition switch mounting bolts (usually 5/16 but I have also seen 11/32 and 3/8 size bolt heads used)

5. Remove the ignition switch by lifting straight up from the column to dis-engage the interlink rod from the ignition tumbler assembly, you should then be able to pull the ignition over towards you just enough to dis-connect the two wire connectors to the switch and then you can remove the old switch from the vehicle. (the interlink rod is sticking straight up from the steering column and it slides up and down with the operation of the key, it fits into a notch in the ignition switch and that is what actuates the switch)

6. Reverse procedure to install new switch, starting with re-connecting the wire connectors and be sure that the interlink rod goes into the notch in the ignition switch.

7. When the switch has been re-installed and is ready to be adjusted, turn the ignition switch to the "ON" position and hold the key in that position and slide the ignition switch up and down until it is in the on position and your dash lights come on, tighten up the ignition switch mounting bolts and then test the operation of the switch, and re-adjust if necessary until the switch operates properly.

8. Adjust the high beam switch by pulling back on the high beam lever and just taking up the slack in the actuator rod to the high beam switch, test the operation of the high beam switch and re-adjust if necessary.

9. When the steering column is bolted back up, re-attach and adjust the shifter position indicator by placing the shifter in neutral and slide the adjusting cable clip until the shift indicator is pointing in the neutral position, test the function of the shift indicator and adjust as necessary.

What you have here is a broken shift indicator adjuster accessed by removing the steering column shrouds or the shift linkage plate at the bottom of the steering column above the pedals has come loose from the shifter tube which goes along the top of the steering column.

Do you have to pull steering column off to install cable to shift column on 93 Ford F150 XL? and how to do it?


Shifter cable? No. It pops on a nipple under dash. Lay on your back looking up under the dash while moving shifter. Do you see the end moving?

Gear shift is not order on my 1999 ford expidition and now is r is park how do i realign the shifter


There is a small string-like cable incased in a plastic tubing that runs from the instrument cluster housing that the indicator sits in, the opposite end is looped onto a hook on the shifter on the steering column. Follow the plastic tubing till you get to the end. There should be a tiny adjusting gear with threads. Turn the gear until your indicator aligns with the correct gear. (Note: you must disassemble the column trim to see the tube)
