Try relocking your driver door and unlocking wit the key.sounds stupid but this how most security systems are overridden.

To re-set the security system you need to turn the ignition switch on and off three times without cranking the engine over. Leave the key on the third time. The security light on the dash should now be flashing. Leave it that way for fifteen or twenty minutes till it stops. then turn the ignition off and start the engine. It is a good idea to attach another battery with jumper cables to your car when doing this so if your battery is a bit low it does not kill it (other car does not need to be running)
If that does not help, the most common failure is the ignition switch itself (key tumbler) If you want to replace it, get a haynes or chilton manual to help. If you have any mechanical experience you may be able to do that without the manual. The column cover needs to be removed and the switch comes out without removing the steering wheel etc. You can use another tumbler from a scrap yard but may end up with another key on your key ring...but, it's much cheaper than a new one. If that fails to work, you will need a new anti-theft module (under the dash usually on the passenger side).
After installing tumbler, system needs to again be re-set as outlined above.

How do you reset the theft system (for the car, not the radio) on a 1996 pontiac sunfire se. the battery went dead and the car has been sitting for a month now. the car will not start with the key. it will...

Your vehicle is equipped with the Passlock theft-deterrent system.
Passlock is a passive theft-deterrent systemT. he system is armed once the keyi s removed from the ignition. Passlock enables fuel if the ignition lock cylinderi s turned with a valid key. If a correct key is not used, fuel is disabled.

During normal operation, the THEFT SYSTEM light will go off after the engine is started. Ln the unlikely event that the engine stalls and the THEFT SYSTEM light flashes, wait until the light stopsf lashing before trying to restart the engine. Remember to release thkee y from the START position as soon as the engine starts. If after several tries the vehicle still does not start, the vehicle may need service. At this time, you may also want to check the fuses. See your Pontiac dealer for service.

If the THEFT SYSTEM light comes on while the engine is running, a problem has been detected and the system may need service. See your dealer for service. In an emergency, call the Pontiac Roadside Assistance Program at 1 -800-ROADSIDE or 1-800-762-3743.

This ans other details can find it in this link for 1996 Pontiac Sunfire - Owners Manual.

I hope helps (remember to rate and comment this).

you can trun the key on your car for 10 to 20 min.s do not try to start it. then trun it off then try to start it and see if that fixes it.
as far as the abs it has to do with the brakes.

Ok. my car 97 pontiac sunfire needed a new alternator output cable. guy put a new one on but apparently messed with something else and now its not starting. said the theft light came on and that it isnt...

Tell the guy to call the dealer and ask them how to override the anti theft system or reset it. when you disconnect the battery and lose power it kicks on the anti theft device and it won't get fire.
