Question about 2001 Volkswagen Beetle
Both P0121 and P0221 indicate that the throttle position sensor (TPS) is out of range.
The TPS is located on the throttle body, and sends to the ECU (main computer) a current signal that is used to elaborate position of the throttle and opening of butterfly valve.
The TPS is tested by using a Voltmeter to read volts on TPS cable, while the pedal is pressed slowly and smoothly. If there are gaps or peaks in voltage, and Volts do not go up smoothly, then the TPS is not working porperly. In that case replace throttle body or throttle body connector.
TPS faults typically cause performance problem, cause the auto transmission working incorrectly, and will turn on the check engine light when the problem is detected by the ECU.
On different VoksWagen models this problem was caused by factory defects. A service bulletin was issued. I suggest calling the local dealer and asking if your car is affected by recall. I have found recall for Passat only, but New Beatle and Passat models share the same engine in some case. In that case reapir will be covered, otherwise you will have to replace wiring harness or throttle body at your expenses.
Here the bulletin for Passat.
