the light is the word securityon the left hand top of instrument cluster. when it is illuminated the car starts and runs for approx 5 seconds. i have tried another crank sensor, a new dizzy, a new coil, had a diagnostic computer check for fault codes, and no codes come up. when i disconnect the battery, for even 10 seconds, i can start and run the car. when i turn the engine of and go to restart it after about 5 mins, the security light is back on and i have to disconnect the battery and repeat procedure to start. my vehicle is a 1997 jeep cherokee sport, 4.0l efi auto trans. i have had a auto electrician look at it and we worked out it is something to do with the security system. how do i disable it??

This is a built in anti theft program in the computer system, called the SKIS module. unfortunately, the only way to rectify this problem is to tow the vehicle to the dealer, and have them unlock the module. call your local dealer and ask them what their particular procedure is. for future reference, any time the battery is disconnected on these vehicles, you need to provide a back up power to the system (ie booster pack). sorry i dont have better news, but thats the way she be! good luck!

2002 JEEP DASH LIGHT OF A KEY INSIDE A CIRCLE is on and jeep won't start

It sounds like the vehicle lost its programming or immobiliser settings. When you replace the module, not only does it need to be programmed or "coded" to the vehicle, the security/immobiliser also needs to be "opened". Finally you MUST MUST MUST use the original master key when starting the vehicle after the fix. If you arent using the master key OR if the battery is low, AT ALL, the sync between, vehicle, computer and programming wont take. Any other lights on the dash? any codes? if it is simply the key, try disconnecting the battery (or completely pulling it out to charge it) then putting it all back in and use the master key to start the car. i recommend putting the key to the "on position" for about 15 seconds before starting, crank it up, let it warm up, then drive at a low rate of speed thru all the shift cycles, to relearn PCM to vehicle and vice versa

I bought a police impound jeep that was a stolen vehicle. Ignition was gone, started up everytime with a screwdriver. Put new ignition in, now it will not start all the time. Sometimes if you turn the...

The first years of that body shape, like the 93 Grand Cherokee, had ecu computer problems. Next time it won't start, check to see if the check engine light does lights up on the dash, when you turn the ignition on, before cranking. If it does not, the fuel pump will not kick on, until that check engine light does come on. It's referred to as the delayed check engine light problem, on early to mid 90's Jeeps. If you find out that is indeed the problem, you can have the ecu computer repaired.

1997 jeep grand cherokee laredo my dash lights went out and the jeep wont start what do i do HELP

You have gotten two problems. First your Vehicle Theft Security System (ignition inhibit feature) has been activated. To disarm it just enter the key and rotate either door or liftgate. If this does not work, locate under in the hinge of the driver door module a violet wire with a brown tracer, put a jumper between that line and ground. That single action should allow you to start the engine. Now, the second problem is dash lights. With the ignition off, you turn the headlamp switch to the right and the dash panel should light. If it doesn't you need to start looking a the basics, that is, fuses/breakers, voltage, ground, the switch itself.

How can I reset my Factory Alarm on my Jeep it wont run

Alarm Module Reset Procedure
NOTE: This information applies to a Vehicle Theft Security System (VTSS) that was armed when the battery was disconnected and reconnected.
When the armed VTSS senses that the battery has been disconnected and reconnected, it enters its power-up mode. In the power-up mode the alarm system remains armed following a battery failure or disconnect. If the VTSS was armed prior to a battery disconnect or failure, the system will have to be actively or passively disarmed following a battery reconnection.
The power-up mode will also apply if the battery goes dead while the system is armed and battery jump-starting is attempted. The engine no-run feature will prevent the engine from starting until the alarm system has been actively or passively disarmed.
Passive disarming of the Vehicle Theft Security System (VTSS) occurs when the vehicle is unlocked using the key to unlock either front door or the lift gate. Active disarming of the VTSS occurs when the vehicle is unlocked by depressing the Unlock button of the Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) transmitter.
Once the alarm has been activated (horn sounding, lights flashing, and the engine no-run feature), either disarming method will deactivate the alarm.
Depressing the Panic button (if equipped) on the RKE transmitter will also disarm the VTSS, but the horn will sound and the lights will flash for about three minutes as part of the Panic feature. The horn and lights can be stopped by pressing any of the RKE transmitter's buttons or driving the vehicle above 15 mph.

98 Jeep Wrangler with Alarm Problem - Installed by Marietta Jeep

Your vehicle has 2 ignition wires that you can put back to factory, and start the vehicle.
The wires you are looking to put back together are (blue) and (black/orange) - and found under the D/S dash. (ignition harness) They will be larger in Diameter than the others.
They were cut to install the security system. They go into the "brain" and out the other side. A relay inside the BRAIN is most likely failing.
If you no longer want the alarm installed, simply match up all of the factory colors. Use crimp-on ****-connectors for secure connection.
Let me know if you need more help.

Go inside the vehicle, dont put key in ignition, leave driver's door open, press the auto lock button on the driver's door, now close door while you are inside and watch on the dash the alarm enable itself, once it stops flashing open the door, this will set off the alarm, lights flashing horn blowing. Now take the key and put it in the drivers door and turn the key to stop the alarm. Now start you vehicle. If you want you can take the glove box apart to get to the vehicle security module to remove it. Dont unplug it unless the vehicle is running (must be running due to back up on computer) unplug the module and you will never have another problem with the security again and it does not effect your powerlocks.
