Check the condition of the tranny oil on the dipstick. If it's black and smelly, the tranny clutches might be worn out. Make sure you have enough fluid in there first. Check the fluid with the car engine running and the tranny in park. The level should be between the 2 marks.

SOURCE: Loud squealing sound in my engine

Try removing the belt and turning each pulley by hand. If everything is smooth and free, with the belt still off, drive down the block once and see if the noise is there (this will eliminate all rotating accessories on the front). If you hear the noise, then there is a problem deeper inside. Oil pressure is good? Dont' forget when doing this, you will have no power steering, so be careful.

Hi, 2hi is your normal driving selection, this is NOT in 4WD mode. Both 4lo and 4hi is for 4 wheel driving, 4lo is used in extreme conditions and will gear the vehicle down to a very slow speed with maximum traction at the wheels, 4hi is for general 4 wheel driving in rough terrain, if you have lights on the dash than it will come on when you change gears, hope this help

My expedition will not shift into gear and it is making a loud noise when i try to change the gear

The transfer case is probably ready to be replaced, if it has electronic fourwheel drive put it in 4hi or 4lo is if that changes, if so transfer case needs replaced.

2001 Jeep Wrangler 5spd.... 2wd is out!

Either you have broken something inside the transfer case but equally likely is that you blew up the spider gears in the rear differential. I'd remove the cover and take a look. If they're broken, it won't be difficult to see.(smaller gears inside the center section) And, they are replacable
Hope that's all it is!
Good Luck!!!

Haven't used 4Lo for about 8 years and can't remember thew sequence to put it in 4Lo - is it gear in neutral then shift or is it keep moving and then put in 4 Lo ?

shift from 2wh to 4hi to neutral then 4lo all while in drive and moving slowly. The owners manual and repair books say you can actually damage the transfercase if the jeep is parked. You can go into 4hi at any driving speed, just not too fast!
