Definitely disconnect battery first. invest in or rent a wheel puller and a ring lock compressor the other tools are pretty standard. mark steering wheel and post so it will go back in the same clocking position. there is usually a reference line on there from the factory.

Multifunction Switch works intermittantly. When the blinkers and wipers stop, have to Bang on the steering column, then it works again. Goes in spurts, have to bang for a week or 2, then it works fine...

  1. Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the upper and lower steering column shrouds.
  3. Disconnect wire connector from the back of the multifunction switch.
  4. Remove screws holding multi-function switch to steering column adapter collar.
  5. Remove the multi-function switch.
To Install:
  1. Position the switch on to the steering column and install the mounting screws.
  2. Connect the electrical connectors to the switch.
  3. Install the upper and lower steering column shrouds.
  4. Connect the negative battery cable.

I have no brake lights, the blinkers run really fast and if the headlights are on the blinkers will not run at all while braking. Any ideas?

Have the multi-function switch and its circuits tested. The multi function switch is the blinker arm and the components its attached to in the steering wheel column. The multifunction switch has to do with blinkers, cruise control, wipers, wiper spray, high beams and also tied in with headlight dimmers/daytime running lights(if applicable) and hazards usually.

A good place to start.

97 Chevy truck blinkers not working but hazards do

Try replacing the Flasher first before spending to much money for a possible simple fix. If it's not your flasher then it could be the turn signal leaver.
Ok, this may seem stupid, but that's what they did to the blazer. They set the flasher near the middle and under the center console behind the radio.

It's to the left of the radio right behind the dash. The hazard flasher and the turn signal flasher are side by side.  It right next to the Cig lighter behind the panel. They do mark the turn signal from the hazard flasher on the plastic behind them. Turn is on the right.

Good luck and hope this helps.

Blinkers don't work even when I replaced the fuse

1st have you fixed the short that caused the fuse to blow? If you did or it was a trailer wiring shor then replace the flasher module, that is the most likely cause of the present problem.

Blinker problem

I would suggest an internally shorted multifunction switch. It should not be very expensive at a dealer and really easy to replace.
  1. Disconnect battery negative cable.
  2. Remove the upper steering column cover. Refer to steering column cover removal procedures below.
  3. Remove multi-function switch mounting screws Multi-Function Switch
  4. Disconnect wire connectors. Lift the switch straight up to remove.
INSTALLATION For installation, reverse the above procedures.
  1. Tighten multi-function switch to column retaining screws to 2.3 N·m (20 in. lbs.) torque.
  2. Tighten steering column cover retaining screws to 2 N·m (17 in. lbs.) torque.
