Question about 2004 Mazda Tribute
If you are speaking of the cooling fan it has a temperature sensor either on the radiator or the water jacket of the engine that closes a circuit to allow the fan to come on . in that system there is also an cooling fan relay that provides power to that circuit. relays are located in a box under the hood.

Make sure your fan is working properly. When you turn on the heater you are forcing the fan to cool the radiator. It may not be turning on automatically when it is supposed to. Let us know if this helps..
