It sound like you have either a defective Mass air flow sensor or it may just be dirty. Now for the most part these components are nonrepairable and should be replaced, but I have on occasion been able to clean them. A MAF sensor is a precise component and disassembly may damage it so you need to be very cautious when doing so. Do not touch the elements and only use an ionized cleanser. Let it dry in open air before assembly do not blow dry with air pressure.
Good luck

Why does my 2003 chevy silverado 4.3L v6 idle extremely rough and it also stalls out when i try to rev up the engine

MAF sensor? Fuel pump going out or weak?
try cleaning with MAF cleaner or electronics cleaner
**don't use carb cleaner or it will ruin the sensor**.
If cleaning gives no joy, replace with a new one.
Check fuel pressure before and after fuel pressure regulator.

What is a solution to fixing the mass air flow system, with code po121

DTC P0121: Throttle Position (TP) Sensor 1 Performance
Circuit/System Description
The engine control module (ECM) uses the following information to calculate an expected airflow rate:
The throttle position (TP)

The barometric pressure (BARO)

The manifold absolute pressure (MAP)

The intake air temperature (IAT)

The engine RPM

P0121 The predicted air flow and the predicted MAP combined are outside a calibrated range for more than 3 seconds.
Circuit/System Testing

  1. Inspect for the following conditions:
  2. ?€¢
Vacuum hoses for splits, kinks, and proper connections as shown on Vehicle Emission Control Information label

Inspect thoroughly for any type of leak or restriction

Air leaks at throttle body mounting area and intake manifold sealing surfaces

Throttle body for dirt, debris, and coking--Refer to Throttle Body Cleaning.

  3. Allow the engine to reach operating temperature. Observe the MAP Sensor Voltage parameter with a scan tool. Voltage should be more than 0.8 volt and less than 4 volts.
  4. ?‡'
If more than 4 volts or less than 0.8 volt, refer to DTC P0106.

  5. Idle the engine. Observe the MAP Sensor kPa parameter with a scan tool. Increase the engine speed slowly and then back to idle. The MAP sensor kPa should change smoothly and gradually as engine speed is increased and returned to idle.
  6. ?‡'
If the MAP sensor kPa does not change, refer to DTC P0106.

  7. Take a snapshot of the engine data list while performing the actions listed below. The mass air flow (MAF) sensor g/s should change smoothly and gradually as the engine speed is increased and is returned to idle.
  8. ?€¢
    Idle the engine.

Increase the engine speed slowly to 3,000 RPM, then back to idle.

Exit from the snapshot and review the data.

Observe the Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor parameter frame by frame with a scan tool. The MAF sensor g/s should change smoothly and gradually as the engine speed is increased and is returned to idle.

If the MAF sensor g/s does not change smoothly and gradually as the engine speed is increased and is returned to idle, refer to DTC P0101 or P1101.

  9. Inspect the throttle body for the following conditions:
Loose or damaged throttle blade

Broken throttle shaft

Any throttle body damage

If any of these conditions exist, replace the throttle body assembly.

Tracker idle problem

sure, when unplugged the MAF , the PCM goes to limp home
and mimics the dead or missing MAF.
one reason, of many
is the AFR is lean, with maf present
then you remove MAF and the mimic goes horrid rich. (normal effect)
this huge rich hides the true cause of horrid lean.

see? 2 wrongs, make a right in this case.

its a 97, why are you scan too free.
connect it and see it fail. and why?
see all sensors. here. same engine, same all.

air leaks on this engine cause, lean.
a dirty mAF causes, lean. (clean it with carb spray 1foot away never close up)
clogged injectors cause, lean.
low fuel pressure causes lean.

if you put all the parts back and scan it
you'd see that.
you'd see the 0xysensor (Front) stuck lean B1S1. bank 1 sensor 1
ignore B1S2.

try a new oxysensor front. first. so the scan tool can see true facts.

on a good engine, the 02 swings at idle
if that fails , i jump over that like at tick on a hound dog.
finding car parked and idling hot AFR issues, is easy with any scan too.
the EFI must be in closed loop at idle, hot, MUST.
is it>?
does the maf read right at idle, ?
1.5-4.0 grams per second
or MAF output pin volts of. 1.7-2.0 volts
if the voltage is good ITS NOT THE MAF, its LEAN AFR.

if you gun the throttle
the maf goes higher.
3v or 20grams/second.

here is me driving see MAF hit 55 grams/ a second.
Hills. do that.
the more HP the more Grams /per second, until max engine torque is hit. and RPM max HP.

here is live data plot of a 96 MAF

the blue line is THROTTLE ANGLE> im driving aggressive as heck.

if the maf tests good, its not the MAF>
its easy to test.

97 gmc seirra 2500 5.7 misses and backfires on deacceleration

Is this problem only on decel does it have a stable idle An egr that is not closing on decel could account for missing even stalling but the backfire indicates excessive fuel in the exhaust stream and egr gas is inert and is only used to dilute the fuel mixture to reduce combustion chamber temperature and control the formation of NOX gases

1994 Oldsmobile Bravada dies at stoplights, just changed fuel pump/filter and egr valve.Appriciate any help. thanks

check for vacuum leaks. You can do this with a can of carb spray but please be careful as it is flammable! if the ignition wires are leaking and you hit them with carb spray you will start the engine on fire!

The safer alternative is to have the engine "smoked" for vacuum leaks. This is done with a smoker. Any place that is leaking you will see smoke.

A trained ear will also be able to hear a leak.

If no leaks are found try unplugging the MAF sensor. Is is in the air tube next to the air filter box. If performance improves try cleaning it with some MAF sensor cleaner. If that doesn't work than you may need to replace it.

2000 catera cold start idles rough and dies. After a few times it gets warm enough and runs smooth as silk.

Did you have battery disconnected or dead recently?

Try to place ignition in run without starting engine for 3 minutes (shut off all accessories and lights etc..). Then shut it off and then start it. Should relearn the idle.

If this doesn't fix the problem, unplug the MAF sensor, if it runs fine with it unplugged, its the MAF sensor.

Exactly what happened on my wife's 01'.

Will not run smoothly when engine warm unless MAF

I would guess you pretty well havew it figured out. Change the MAF sensor.
