If the car is smoking through the muffler then its burning the oil if not, check for a loose engine filter or leaky oil pressure sensor that leaks only when the car is running.

Had the same problem. That NorthStar engine is meant to be run hard. If your using oil that fast my guess is that you drive very short distances daily. Take it out on the freeway at least once a week and let 'er rip. you'll see the difference right away.

2006 subaru forester burning oil

never-- I repeat never --use a used car dealer to do repairs on your car
The people employed are seldom qualified mechanics and they only know how to "bodgie" jobs just to get the car ready for a sale
oil will not leak from a head if the engine is running well , but oil will leak from faulty rocker cover gaskets
from your description, I suspect that when the car went in for the head gaskets a clapped out motor was fitted instead ( check engine numbers on the papers )
If you need a motor , there are plenty of good engines from japanese
engine importers
But at best do not have anything to do with that shop as the engine rebuild could be changing the engine back for your original motor

Check your oil if it is over full the water from the radiator is going into your crank case also the oil will look like a chocolate color. Yes check your radiator as well for leaks or cracks in it. Did you check the cylinder head to make sure it wasnt warped sometimes when they over heat they will warp and you will have to have the surface sanded down till its true again or level.if it is warped then its not seating down on the block all the way to make that good seal thus creating the leak into the crank case.

fill the radiator and start the car let it sit at idle for a while. then check under the car for leaks. try to locate the leak and see if its a job you can handle or take it to a shop also you said you smellled it when you turned on the heat. check the passenger side floor board and see if it's wety this could be a bad heater core. if you cant find the leak check your tail pipe smoke if it's real smokey and white this is a sighn of a bad head gasket or intake gasket

Oil light flashing, last oil change 7 wks ago

I belive they didn't reset the oil light timer. I belive the sequence is 1. key on (not acc with engine off)
2. step on the brake pedal 5 times within 10 seconds. 3. key off. 4. start car. 5. check if the light went out. you may have to try it a few times to get it.

from what it sounds like yes it seems you have a blown head, check the oil to make sure there is no coolant mixed in with it, you would see green drops or it would look like whitish chocolate milk, there shouldnt be any unless you have a cracked block, but mostlikley you have a blown head since i dont think the intake runs coolant through it on these models do you smell a sweet scent from the exhaust? or does exhaust blow white smoke under acceleration? these are signs but from what your saying pretty sure you need a new HG, good luck let me know how it goes
if you take it to a shop they can do a leakdown test on the cylinders and if head gasket is blown you will see bubbles comming up out of the radiator when uncapped.
