I got it from a part store they programed it for my van they used my vin # and mileage. I can hear the starter click once but the engine wont turn over at all. I hooked up the old one and nothing the old one would start the car but now its doing the same thing the new one is. I checked all of the fuses. I looked at the wires but I will inspect them closer.

  • nootkas_fall Apr 29, 2010

most of the time. When you gave it gas sometimes it would die.

  • nootkas_fall Apr 29, 2010

It is a reconditioned ECM. They had the data from my van so they could program it. I have checked all cables going to and from the battery, checked the wires going to the started from the fuse box. took a wire and "hot wired" (because I dont know what you call it) the starter to see if it would crank and it tries to turn over but it just wont start. I am sure that it is something simple. I have also taken the battery in to make sure it is good. I am out of ideas at this point.

Did it run before you replaced the ECM?

Did the new ECM come from the dealer or a junk-yard?
I ask because if it came from the dealer it would need the prom installed and it also may need additional programming and/or updates. But do recheck your connections. You may have accidentally bent a pin or broke a wire.

You are probably frustrated with the questions from us but hang in there. We're not there so we need to ask for clarification.
You said that with the new ECM that your cars issue is that you hear a click and then nothing. That sentence sounds like you are saying that the starter failed to crank over. Is that true?
If so, then you need to look at the starter, battery, and connections.
Whether the ECM is good or not the starter will still crank over.
You can proof this out by by-passing the ignition switch.
You may find out that because of an unknown bad connection (either a bad ground or positive connection) this could of caused you to think that your ECM was faulty.

Well I will say that if you had a bad connection, battery, of faulty charging system. Then you could have that symptom (with the car stalling when you give it gas). Have you had a chance to verify that the battery is at !00% and that the starter will crank over if you by-pass the ignition switch.
If I'm losing you or misunderstood then please tell me and reexplain what you think the source of the issue is and why. Thank you.

Ok, thank you, I understand. I agree with you that it could be something simple. You know that the battery is fully charged and is in good condition. You know that the starter is in good condition and will turn the engine over normal. The problem that you have is that sometimes it will not start and sometimes it will start and then die.
Have you already checked for fuel and spark? But when I ask this I mean that on all six cylinders, they show good spark (blueish-white) and pulse consistently? And with the fuel, do you have around 35psi or more in the fuel line? It isn't enough to think that the pump is fine just because you can hear it.
Before you got into this repair was the engine light on? If so be fore the ECM was removed, did you retrieve the code/s?
Why did you go with replacing the computer first?
The other reason I ask about checking for spark is because of a faulty Crank sensor. But you should of seen a engine light. But not always just usually. Well let me know, good luck.

Check all the ECM fuses, if the fuses are OK try replacing the ASD (Auto Shut Down) relay.

Pulled the ecm fuse while car was running now it wont start .

Year/make/model???? Pulling this fuse will cause the ecm memory to be erased. You may have to hold your foot on the gas pedal somewhat and coax it to start and get it running so the ecm can perform a relearn. Not a wise idea to pull this fuse. Worst case scenerio is internal ecm failure

I have a lhs 1996 Chrysler. The car wont start and the engine fuze burns out.

I also have a 96 LHS that randomly blows the 20 amp ECM fuse. If this is what you are referring to, the problem may be in one of your ECM sensors. 1-Start by unplugging all ECM sensors (Temp, Cam, Crank, 2-O2, TPS, etc.) and replace the fuse. 2-Crank the starter (the car will not start) and see if the fuse blows. If it does you probably have an electrical problem with the ECM. 2-If the fuse does not blow, plug in only the cam sensor and start the car; it will idle rough and the check engine light will come on. If the fuse blows, the problem is the cam sensor or wiring to it. 3-Continue plugging in sensors one at a time and try starting. When the fuse blows, you will know which sensor and/or wiring to the sensor to check. This process of elimination has worked twice for me.

Ecm module gone bad psooiblely

Clean and tighten your battery cables. I have a 95 cutlass supreme that did the same thing. If that doesnt fix it, the ECM may be to blame. When the ECM went in my Olds, the car would fire but only run for 2-3 seconds. Once I had the ECM replaced it was fine

Alarm wont allow car to start

are you sayiing that your car has a key with no plastic from the factory like that?
and you changing the ECM it won't start you need to have an ECM matched to the vehicles VIN or it cannot start. The dealer is the only one who can program and upload the information.
