Sounds like you’ve lost a gear. Generally a cog failure in the gearbox. Would either need a rebuild or replacement.
Another thing to check 1st is the “gear linkages” as one of these can pop off or snap. Cheap enough to replace if your lucky then this may be the fault.
There is also a gear selector box on top of Most gear boxes. This is where the linkages join the gear stick to the gear box. If the selector is faulty it won’t go in some gears properly
we cant guess your drive line, not now or ever.
so why ask. us?
my guess you mean the car drives in 1st gear but will not upshift,
and flares, in a false neutral.
wont and want is speed wrong 2 times, why?
Is car with TOD? torque on demand option, we cant see the dash board, we be like blind.
check fluild levels yet,
get the box serviced last decade, (a full flush and filter,) sure no.
check fuses, maybe car has TCM that cant up shift due to fuse blown.
and last did you scan it, if not why not
that be 3rd step after levels, fuses, then scan.
if the TCM cant see sensors, it cant upshift,
TCM is the tranny brain.
Check the transmission fluid.make sure the car is at operating temperature and in park.go to parts store and buy transmission filter kit. automatic transmission works on fluid pressure if it is restricted the tramsmission won't shift right.the fluid and filter are to b changed usually between 40 to 50k miles
With the engine off, check your operation of the gear shift. If you can go in and out of the gears fine without the engine running, then you have a worn clutch disc that needs replaced. If the problem still exists then you either have low fluid/weak hydraulic system, or there is a problem with the syncro that may be adjusted.
Sounds like one of the speed sensors are bad. It has an input speed sensor and an output shaft speed sensor. You need to have the TCM scanned for codes to see if one of them is bad.
shift linkage needs adjusting,,could be bent, easy fix, located along firewall to fram beneath the column, ask your son wut he ran over and didnt tell u about... hope i could help...:)
Look at the transmission control module and the shift solenoids inside the transmission. It's possible you have lost a connection in the harness plug that goes to the transmission.
Brake lock solenoid has failed not allowing the gear selector to move out of "Park"
Excessively low transmission fluid (note: if car is operated for an extended amount of time with low fluid level the transmission will fail prematurely)
Shorted electrical component not allowing the PCM to control the transmission. Example: shorted fuse
Flex plate (flywheel) is broken completely not transferring engine power to the transmission.
2. Car goes into gear but then fades out of gear or is slipping while driving:
Transmission fluid is low
Transmission clutch discs or bands are worn out or burned
Faulty transmission shift solenoid.
3. Car goes into gear but does not shift out of first:
