Would you state everything that was done or tried? Did these symptoms just happen out of the blue or was there a repair that didn't go as planned? Back-firing thru the airbox could be related to valves or timing. I want to know what the fuel pressure is at.

Sounds like you may have a defective fuel pump causing a lean condition thus causing it to backfire.

1992 mercury sable will turn over but wont start

Make sure battery has a full charge. If it cranks good but won't start, check the basics. Have a helper crank it while you visually check for spark at the spark plugs, if spark everywhere, use a gage and check proper fuel pressure. I looked at info for the 3.8L engine, 35--40 psi. Also, after you build fuel pressure, turn off the key, see if fuel pressure holds for a bit? If the pressure drops like a rock, check for fuel pressure leak. Check the vac line for fuel pressure regulator, if it has gas in it, the regulator is faulty, or a leaking fuel injector. The pressure could also drain back through fuel pump.
Also, check fuel injector pulse, engine cranking. Any applicable trouble codes?
Smell of the crankcase oil dipstick, if it smells like gas, either you don't change oil and filter very often or the engine is running very rich for some reason.

How do i replace a fuel pressure regulator in a 92 stanza

Relieve fuel pressure (See procedure below). Remove air duct. Remove accelerator cable bracket. Remove vacuum hose from regulator. Remove fuel return hose from regulator. Remove screws and regulator. Reverse procedure to install.

Disconnect fuel pump relay (See Diagram). Start engine and hold at 1600 RPM until engine stall. Turn ignition switch off. Allow engine to cool completely before performing any fuel system repairs.

I have a 1998 Chevy Lumina with the 3.8 litre engine, 197000 miles. The engine cranks up and runs fine until the engine warms up, then it stalls out and will not run. The engine will fire back up, but will...

One possible scenario is that the fuel pressure regulator is stuck in the high pressure mode because its vacuum diaphragm is leaking. High pressure mode is okay for cold starting. But as the engine warms up the high pressure setting leads to the fuel injectors injecting too much fuel and the engine floods out.

My 2003 envoy has gas in airbox/ chugs and sometimes runs on after shutting it off

You need to change your fuel pressure regulator ASAP before the vehicle starts on fire.

We see them leaking all the time and get one towed in every once and a while that has started on fire because of this.

The fuel pressure regulator is located between the valve cover and the alternator. There will be a rubber vacuum hose going to it. Remove that hose from either the regulator or follow it up to the side of the air chamber and remove it. If there is liquid fuel in the hose the regulator is bad!

Truck runs real bad and terrible fuel milage with a 4.3 litre engine

Good chance that the fuel pressure regulator is leaking gas and needs to be replaced. The fuel pressure regulator is located at the base of the throttle body and when it's starts to leak when the engine is running, it starts to flood the engine causing it to run bad and rich in fuel. The other common thing that would cause this is a faulty EGR valve, due to carbon build up and will need to be cleaned or replaced.
Do a fuel drop down test, test pressure line with gauge attached...leave for a bit...does fuel pressure stay close to where it was or drop off fast... if it drops off test the fuel pressure regulator by pinching off the vacum line...while running...pressure should increase...if it doesn't then replace pressure regulator.
Good luck and keep me posted.

Engine turns over but won't start. No fuel in the

If there is a rubber return line going back to the gas tank clamp it off with vise grips. If it starts it is the fuel pressure regulator. If not try changing the fuel filter.

1999 jeep c. 4.0 litre engine. Fuel drips from muffler wont start

How is this car running? Remove the vacuum line from the pressure regulator on the fuel rail and check to see if there is any gas coming out of the line. If you see gas then the regulator is bad.
