Hi Guys: I have a problem that NO one has been to fix

Hi Guys: I have a problem that NO one has been able to fix. I have a 1988 Ford Ranger, 2.3 Liter, 4 cylinder with 200,000 + miles on it. I go out in the morning and it starts and runs great. I go to work stopping for breakfast and go out and it starts great, but when I shift in first and go forward it coughs and sputters for about 10 to 20 seconds after wich it runs great. After I get to work if I need to go some place it coughs and sputters again. So far the truck was the plugs, plug wires, stator, EC module, fuel pump relay and another relay replaced. I have been fighting this problem for the better part of a year.. It does notmatter if it is summer or winter.

Hi drsinister 69: Where are the O2 and coolant temp sensors located? I will be working on them over the week end. I am going to see if I can fix the problem my self. I am tired of paying out good money with no results. I will let you know what happens. Bill

Hi drsinister: I tried letting the truck idle before trying to go forward and it stalled after about 1 minute setting still. It ran great after the stall.

Hi!!

Have you changed the fuel filter? Checked for cracked or loose vacuum hoses? Changed distributor cap and rotor? (If equipped).

I beleived your fuel filter is clogged or have impurities in the fuel system.

Change your filter and dump the contents of the old one in a clean container so you can check for impurities. Keep me posted.

Does your CHECK ENGINE comes on? Have the computer codes retrived at an AutoZone, they will do it for free. If your Oxygen Sensor is bad, the first thing that happens is the check engine light coming on. No way the oxy sensor could be bad and the light not coming on.

I would check the coolant temperture sensor for the correct resistance. Does it do it if you let the truck run for a couple minutes before you take off? The other would be the O2 sensor. It sounds as if it is an open loop problem. EEC-IV computers use certain readings from different sensors, depending on if the vehicle has just been started, (open loop), then after the vehicle has run for two minutes or so, it goes in to closed loop, then the computer uses input from more sensors to make the engine run properly. If this only happens when you get in the vehicle and take off, I would look into the 02 sensor and the coolant temp sensor. Has the fuel filter been replaced?

The O2 sensor/s are usually located in or around the exhaust manifold. The coolant temperature sensor is normally screwed into the water jacket, usually around the intake manifold. Here's a picture of the coolant sensor.

That really sounds like a coolant temp sensor. I would check the resistance of the coolant temp sensor with a digital volt/ohm meter. Most parts stores or manual should have the resistance values for different temps, cold engine, warm engine. If there's no resistance, then it's bad. Also check to see if with the key on, you have 5 volts at one of the terminals of the coolant temp sensor plug, I would think so. The think I have forgot to ask is the check engine light on?

Sounds like it is running rich, could be a stuck injector or a bad water temperature sensor. Is the check engine light on?

did you guys put a meter on the wires going into the coil and make sure they are getting power when the key is turned on?

If you do get power then I would check the distributor

If you don't get power then trace the coil wires for a blown fuse or pinched wire
