It will have to be done with a code reader for obd2 system.

To turn off the service engine soon light, you can disconnect the negative battery cable for a minute, reconnect it, then start it up again. If all your issues are resolved the service engine light will not reappear. Be sure to check simple things like making sure your gas cap is on/tight. Then, if you have a digital odometer and still have issues, hold down odometer/reset button while starting engine and it will test again and give you the codes, write them down and look them up on the web.

You can get the code and fix what is wrong.
After 2 drive cycles the light will go out by itself.
Process for a Ford Drive Cycle :
If you just want to turn off the light, you can disconnect the battery for 10 min, and it will go out, but once you complete a drive cycle, if the problem is still there, the light will come back on.
Until you complete a drive cycle, the system will have a DTC of P1000 ( tests not completed ) code set that a code reader or EPA test system will find ( dose not illuminate the CEL ).

You will only be able to turn off the ck eng. light with a scan-tool. If you don't know someone that has one then go to Auto-zone and buy one. Cheapest one is $50.

engine light comes on and off, these are indication that there is some
error code stored in your vehicles ECM. The engine module computer
needs to be scanned. These will give the code and as per the error code the
further problem can be detected and confirmed. The engine light
indicator blinks or remains steady on dash when engine computer
noticed any problem with any engine electrically operated components.
more help, I suggest you to refer the help links provided below. These will let
you know more about which areas to look, check, when there is engine light
coming up on dash panel.

The information below was complied by me, it explains what causes the check engine light to come on and the process of finding the cause.
When the Check Engine light (or Service Engine Soon or small picture of an engine) is turned on, the systems computer control unit (called the PCM) has sensed a fault in the electronic controls of the engine and/or the emission system. When this happens you will seldom feel the car engine run any different. There are about 200 possible system faults (the gas cap is just one of them) that turn the Check Engine light on, to know what has developed a problem you must have the system tested, this is called an OBD2 fault code test, Kragen/Oriley and Autozone parts stores (USA only) do this testing for free.
