Fuel line schematics for 2001 silverado 5.3? - 2001 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

If the truck is stock and uses factory fuel injection there are two lines that run along the frame rail. The larger line with the fuel filter in it is the high pressure fuel supply line. It runs from the fuel tank to the injection system. The smaller line that runs from the injection system to the tank is the fuel return line. It returns unneeded fuel from the injection system to the tank. There is a very small third line. It runs from the tank to the carbon canister at the front of the truck and vents the tank. When working with the supply or return lines take precautions to keep high pressure fuel contained. Good Luck.

Check fuel pressure,
most likely you need to replace fuel pump
not that hard and only takes about 30 min
pressure needs to be around 65 lbs
5 lbs less and it wont run

How do drop the fuel tank to replace the fuel pump on a 2001 chev silverado 1500?

some times it is easier to remove the bed.

jack up truck

unhook the fuel inlet hose and vent

reach threw fender and unhook fuel lines from top of tank and wiring plug

remove bolts from fuel tank straps ( the ones closest to drive shaft )

lower tank

sounds easy but is is harder then it sounds expecly if the tank is full of gas.

get a few friends over and pull the bed.

This special tool is available at your local auto parts store. Ask your parts expert what size you will need. The tool is fitted around the fuel line and pushed into the fitting on the filter. Make sure you relieve the fuel system pressure before proceeding.

My 2001 chevy silverado has no fuel pressure when checked. the truck will turn over and fire. i have checked the fuel filter, seems to be fine. you can also hear the fuel pump running when the key is on....

Try having the fuel pressure regulator checked, it's round in shape at the end of the fuel rail, and has a small vaccum line connected to it.
Also check that vaccum line to see what shape it's in, the littlest pin hole will cause a problem.

Process to change fuel pump on 2001 chevy silverado 1500

take the six bed bolt loose and then take three buddies slide the bed back put in the new pump slide it back n place and put the bed bolts back in. if u drop the tank u can easily break the hard plastis lines that go to the fuel tank. u only have to take the fill lines and taillight wires loose this way its alot quicker, and easier.

Location of fuel filter

The fuel filter is located under the body,at the drivers door, on the frame. It looks like a round silver(or black depending on manufacturer) canister with lines coming in from both ends.
It has snap connectors for the lines. To disconnect the lines, you must squeeze the connectors with small pliers (Ford has a tool for this) while pulling the lines out.
Be VERY careful because the fuel will pour out when the lines come off.
Release the filter bracket (5/16ths nut-driver) to remove the filter.
Replace the new filter into the bracket - make sure the 'flow' arrow is pointing forward
Push the lines in until you hear a click and you're finished
