I am assuming that it has the overhead cam engine. If this is the case then you will need special tools that are required to align the camshafts withe cam sprockets. Dont attempt this job without these tools. Severe internal engine damage may occur if improperly aligned.

I've changed my idler pulley and tension pulley on my 1999 mercury mountaineer and my belt keeps coming off and it's a new belt also. What else can be the problem?

Yolanda, did you only change pulley on the tension er, the tension er arm may be worn and miss aligning belt allowing belt to drift and fall off. I will post some links below of what to check for.

How do you take the transmission out of a 1997 mercury mountaineer?

might be better to take the vehicle as a whole and let the repairer remove the tranny , i know will cost more but you then will have to put it back in not knowing if the repair was ok , then your no better of,if you want to take it out yourself get a workshop manual to show step by step as no one could type all the info here ,might find a online manual try a forum that is specific to your vehicle as they will probably have the information you require etc
