Not passing smog, no code or engine light

Its going to be tough to find the problem without access to a 4 gas machine. Especially if there are no trouble codes in the computer.
If the fuel mixture is rich it should set a code for one or both O2 sensors. Same thing if the EGR is not working, etc.
One thing that could cause problems is the thermostat not getting the engine up to normal temp.

How to replace a speed sensor in a 2000 Toyota Tacoma

The speed sensor is located on the outside of the transmission case, it has a wire connector going to it. There are other sensors called turbine speed sensors and they are located inside the transmission. It all depends on what problem you have.

My 2000 Toyo. Tacoma Prerunner TRD V6, truck Failed smog due to the part #3 Functional Computer Tests due to an erased MIL. But had passed the Visual Inspection, and Emissions. So i bought a Code reader...

there are 2 sensors in the system
one is a heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) in the exhaust manifold / pipe before the cat converter that reports the exhaust gas composition to the ECM so that fuel/ air ratios can be adjusted
if that one is faulty it is most likely the reason for running lean or rich
the second sensor is the oxygen sensor (O2) which is after the cat converter and reads the results of the cat converter cleaning the exhaust
you may have to replace both the sensors to get a clearance or replace the cat converter as well as the HO2S unit

I have a 2000 tacoma 3.4l with double cats bought from california. I am throwing a P0420 code. Would that mean that my cats would be bad or the O2 sensor?

the code itself is for catalyst efficiency. however, the cats are monitored by the 02s. there should be some basic diagnostics performed on the 02 sensors before condemning the cats. monitoring with a scan tool, your front (bank 1) sensors should rapidly switch from .2V - .8V . this indicates that the engine is operating correctly. if the cats are functioning correctly, the rear (bank 2) sensor readings should remain fairly steady, aprox. .4V . this indicates the cat is working. if the rear 02's are a mirror image (or close to) of the front 02 readings, this indicates the cats are not performing their job, the 02's are functioning correctly, and replacing the cats will fix your problem. good luck!

Prerunner wont pass smog due to engine service light

Not positive on this so consider only. The o2 sensor is what actually tells everything else what is going on with emmission and everything else adjusts to what info it relays. The o2 is also subjected to extreme temps and cooling cycles. So, instead of spending money on no answer diagnostism give replacement of o3 sensor so consideratio. If you choose to replace, wd40 and let exhaust cool down. Good Luck.
