Question about Toyota Pickup

1 Answer

I have a 1985 toyota pickup 22r engine the truck runs fine all the way through first and second no problems then in third is good until it hits about 3500 rpm and almost seems like it looses everything then sputters. if i let it go down to 2000 rpm it runs fine until i get back up to 34 to 3600. it gets worse if you try to floor it when problem occurs, does the same in forth. i have put a new fuel pump, filter, cap and router, plugs, checked the plug wires, replaced carb with a good running carb off another 22r still have the same problem.

Check the catalytic convertor, they will plug up and decrease your power due to the fact that the exhaust can't get out as fast as you are trying to put it in.Let me know how you make out.

Have you tried the exhaust system yet, unhook the pipe ahead of the converter and if the problem goes away then you have your answer,if not,let me know.

Are the valves adjustable on a 85 toyota pickup 22R?

22R,yes,it might might make a grand difference to how it runs,
figure 8 tho. on the intake and 10 tho. on the exhaust.
Didn't look up the specs but that will be ok.
Just a 12 mil. locknut and a flatblade screwdriver,
Easy job, just be careful, don't leave anything loose, but don't break off a rocker arm adjuster because it's too tight.
There is a sequence to adjust, but to get close ,just turn the engine till one valve is all the way open and adjust the closed one next to it(same cyl)
Cover gasket is good for another round I bet ,but a cover kit from the parts store will give you the little grommets for the studs.

1985 toyota pickup.22r,automatic trans,2 barrel carb,ca smog. rough idle until engine hits thermostat.passes smog.all vacume lines fine, and zip tied.

There ar two thermo vacuum switches on the intake manifold, one in the center top by the EGR pipe right next to the valve cover, and one center bottom on the outside right below the carburator,it may be that one of them is not fully opening/closing when the motor is cold.I'm not sure on this as I've never had this problem with my 22R's,hopefully this will point you in the right direction,if you want comment back and I'll research this further(it's 5 in the morn and I cant access my 22r manual)

Need to change engines

If you have a 22r carbed then all 22r carbed engines from 1981-1995 will interchange. You may need to use sensor out of your old engine however. The 20r,22r,22re,22ret all have the same mounts and tranny bolt patterns. how ever there are lot of differences. you can swap from a 22r to a 22re but you must also swap the entire vehical wiring harness to do it right. if you have a 3.0L i would keep the same engine. some people have swap to the tacoma 3.6L but that is a expensive swap not exsactly bolt on so to say. If you have a 22re then stay with the 1986-1987 22re because the newer 22re use different computers, electronics ,sensors and more.. Same story with the 22ret. I hoped this helped.

1985 Toyota pickup 22r non cali emissions ( Drives then dies no fuel in carb)

I had a similar problem and it turned out to be the rubber fuel lines being old and cracked. The hoses would warm up and fuel would squirt out of the cracks. I had to replace three fuel line hoses and it has been running great ever since. Good luck.

1985 Toyota Pickup 22R

When the engine is running ragged, place your hand over the opening of the carburator. If the idle smooths out, you have a vacuum leak somewhere on the intake system; it could be the base gasket for the carb, the intake manifold gasket, or a broken vacuum line, or a combination of that. What you have is too much air getting into the engine, but the air is not going thru the carb. Please check for vacuum leaks, you can use a can of carb cleaner, spray the intake manifold, if the idle smooths up, that would be a good place to start.
