No, the ticking happens for a minute or so off and on regardless of whether im trying to start it or not.
Is there a way of determining if it is the starter or not without putting a new one in?

Is the ticking only when you try to start the engine?
have you checked the starter yet?

yes there is locate the starter relay probably in fuse box under the hood but i have seen them in kick panel. take the relay out then run a wire from the positive battery post and touch the terminals one at a time until you hear the starter engage. one of them will make it engage if it is good. no insults meant here but be careful not to ground the wire anywhere and make sure car will not be in gear to move when starter engages. The ticking noise could be coming from a relay. Not sure why it is doing it all the time but see if it stops when you remove the starter relay. Usually there are several of the same type relays on a car. Some for a/c and some for heater-headlights etc. Match numbers found on the relay case and you can swap a relay to see if you have a bad one. Thanks for the reply. I will be watching my emails - Joe

Wont turnover battery is fully charge will turn over if I jump the battery terminal's on the cililoned but wont start

Wiring to solenoid not correct or faulty/corroded. Battery not enough amps to turn starter. A battery can seem charged but not have enough amps which fools a lot of people when batteries get old.

1998 Grand Cherokee, 4L/6c.T Ticking sound in interior, passanger fuse box, # 7 culprit (20 amp, yellow; Ticking occurs without key in ignition, remove fuse ticking stops

I doubt its a short. a short to power would mean something is getting power besides through the fuse and your battery would die. I short to ground would cause the fuse to blow. my guess would be some device that is controlled by this fuse is malfunctioning. if you can try and unplug devices like the radio amplifier and see if the noise is removed.

best of luck

Radio doesnt work

Possible causes

1. Audio fuse (power shunt) blown or not fully pressed in
2. Audio Fuse not making a good connection in the fuse box
3. Radio is unplugged
4. Radio is burned out
5. Radio wiring (has been compromised by someone tinkering with it).

Go to www.hmaservice.com and register your vehicle by VIN #.. you'll then have access to wiring diagrams, shop manuals, service bulletins, illustrations, etc.

Hope that helps.

BMW X5 2001... Will not start/turnover when the key is in the ignition and turned lights on cluster etc work/come on but engine will not turnover and when trying to turnover lights start blinking ie...

This sounds like the battery may be weak or a bad connection. I would start by have the battery checked or try jump starting the car, try jumpimg it and see if that will make it start, if it starts then you may have a charging or battery problem, seeeing that this car is over 10yrs old and if the battery is the same one that came with the car then i would have to think you may have a bad battery. good day

I hear a ticking sound coming from the fuse box and the car wont start and has no power

It is most likely a relay.. Find the ignition relay location in your manual and replace it..

Have a great day !

You will have to check, at the starter, for power to the SMALL wire on the starter solenoid (which is on the starter) when turning the ignition switch to start.
If there is power to this wire ( usually purple ) and power at the LARGE cable ( from the battery ) at the starter end.....you need a starter.

If you do not have power at the small wire at the solenoid with the key in start position and battery power is OK.....check the safety neutral switch.Moving the shifter around a little can sometimes allow the car to start if the neutral switch is worn.

A new battery does not always mean a fully charged battery.
Try a boost from another car before testing the starter for power.

The battery cables need to be clean and tight....and check the ground to the engine as well.

Everything else may work OK with bad connections, they don't use the power the starter needs to turn the engine over.

2002 jaguar x type wont start, lights, radio, air have power. clicking sound when turning the key to start the engine. Engine light stays, no engine turnover

Hi .
unlikely to be immobiliser fault ,so check basics, try a set of jump leads or check battery voltage above 12.5,if the clicking is coming from the starter motor with a fully charged battery then suspect starter motor failure.
