Open Question

CODE P272c showing via diagnostics. Car went for MOT failed on emmissions and had pre catalytic converter lambda sensor replaced. Now we have this problem, it idles erratically between 800 and 950 rpm and occasionally revs to about 1200 rpm when stationary. 2003 BMW 316ti compact

if its flooding then its not sparking,or auto choke stuck .suggest you learn german and swear at it in own language ,failing which take it to a dealer as it could be anything from a cracked coil pack to a temperature sensor and without the vehicle in front of me this is one of them look and see type jobs.Could evan be the multiplug on the coil pack loose honestly its very dificult to diagnose without hands on .

have throttle body checked also the MDK throttle motor,

Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1) What does that mean?



The catalytic converter is a part of the exhaust system that looks kind of like a muffler, although it\'s job is very different from that of a muffler. A catalytic converter\'s job is to reduce emmissions from the exhaust. The catalytic converter has an oxygen sensor in front and behind it. When the vehicle is warm and running in closed loop mode, the upstream oxygen sensor waveform reading should fluctuate. The downstream O2 sensor reading should be fairly steady. Typically the P0420 (or in your case, a 7e8 code) code triggers the Check Engine Light if the readings of the two sensors are similar. This is indicative of (among other things) a converter that is not working as efficiently as it should be (according to specs). Catalytic converters are not normally a "wear" type item, that is they are not deisgned to wear out and need replacement. If they have failed, it is likely due to something else that caused it to fail. Symptoms The main symptom to the driver is the illumination of the MIL (malfunction indicator lamp). You will likely not notice any drivability problems, although there may be symptoms. For example, if the substance inside the catalytic converter is broken or failed, it may be restricting the exhaust which will result in a feeling of reduced power output from the vehicle. Causes A code P0420 may mean that one or more of the following has happened: Leaded fuel was used where unleaded was called for A damaged or failed oxygen sensor (HO2S) Downstream oxygen sensor (HO2S) wiring damaged or connected improperly The engine coolant temperature sensor is not working properly Damaged or leaking exhaust manifold / catalytic converter / muffler / exhaust pipe Retarded spark timing The oxygen sensors in front and behind the converter are reporting too similar of readings Leaking fuel injector or high fuel pressure Cylinder misfire Oil contamination Possible Solutions Some suggested steps for troubleshooting a P0420 error code include: Check for exhaust leaks at the manifold, pipes, catalytic converter. Repair as required. Use a scope to diagnose the oxygen sensor operation (Tip: The oxygen sensor in front of the catalytic converter normally has a fluctuating waveform. The waveform of the sensor behind the converter should be more steady). Inspect the downstream heated oxygen sensor (HO2S), replace if necessary Replace the catalytic converter Overall probably the biggest mistake vehicles owners make when they have a P0420 code is to simply replace an oxygen sensor (H02S). It is important to do proper diagnosis so you\'re not wasting money replacing parts unnecessarily. We strongly recommend that if you need to replace the catalytic converter that you replace it with an OEM unit. Second choice would be a high-quality replacement part. There are many stories in our forums where folks replaced the cat with a cheaper aftermarket one only to have the code return shortly thereafter. One thing to note is that many vehicle manufacturers offer a longer warranty on emissions-related parts. So if you have a newer car but it\'s out of it\'s bumper-to-bumper warranty, there still may be warranty on this type of problem. Many manufacturers give a five year, unlimited mileage warranty on these items. It\'s worth checking into.

Garage says my w reg golf gti is running rich,they say its because i only have 1 lambda sensor on,should my car have 2 on


didnt know that the earlier golfs had two lambda sensors,but that said,if there are supposed to be two,then there will be one before the catalytic convertor (pre-cat)and then one after,if the car has had the exhaust changed by a previous owner,then this maybe the issue,you need to get it checked out because this is an MOT faliure item,i.e emissions too high/hydrocarbons too high.seems the cheapest way to solve this is by fitting the correct exhaust unfortunately.hope this helps

Our 2003 1.4 Nissan Cube has failed its MOT on the emmissions. The garage we use have checked the Lambda and the cat and reckon they are fine. Their diagnostic equipment wont talk to the car and are stuck...


That is easy.
Why would you go to a repair shop, that is not up to speed with their scanner software?
You don't ask those questions before doing business with them?

I have a Pontiac Vibe 2003 P0420 error code. What


Basically, your on board computer is telling you your catalytic converter is not working properly. As you know, you have a sensor in front and in back of the converter. The computer compares the waveforms from each sensor. If the sensor waveform before and after the cat are the same, then the cat is not working. You should have an analysis of the waveforms at each sensor analyzed at a shop and, if they are the same, the dealer should replace the cat if it is still under warranty. Most common would be the O2 sensor after the Catalytic converter has failed and will need to be replaced. It takes about 15 min to replace and any muffler shop can replace the O2 sensor for you.

Hi the code P0139 is Bank 1 sensor 2 lambda sensor fault ,possible wiring or sensor fault even if you replace the sensor you need to have the MIL lamp turned off by a Diagnostic machine,it is possible you have another fault such as poor Catalytic converter efficency giving the same fault code ,Would recomend you get the car checked and read the "live" data as the car see`s it to make an accurate diagnosis and cure

I have a 1997 Jaguar XJ6 Very high emmissions?


I have an X300 and had very high emmissions at an MOT. Diagnosed by Jaguar as the Lamda (02) sensors. Bought alternatives as Jag wanted a fortune and had them fitted by the Jaguar Main Dealer. Took it for MOT and it still had the same emmissions! MOT chap swapped the leads of the two Lambda sensors over and it was perfect! Still don't know if was the problem or the sensors were faulty.
So check if either the Lamda sensors are faulty or they are plugged in the wrong way. Try swapping the leads first as it is much cheaper!
