the minutes won't move when turned to the right but the hours change when turned to the left. If this is indicating the need for a new switch how much will this set me back?

the hours change when turned to the left but when turned to the right the minutes won't move. How involved and expensive is it to replace the switch?

Believe it or not, but according to my VW service data...

Correction of the clock is only possible with Motometer instrument clusters from a limited manufacturing period.

Scan tool VAG 1551 with a program card version /8.0 is required for clock correction.

On the left side you will see what looks like a black skinny knob. Turn that to the left or right and hold it there.
You will see your clock begin to change.
Left is hours right is minutes.
If it is not functioning properly - the switch may be defective and need replacement.

Thanks!!

2000 Jetta GLS 5 speed. I bought a new car, I went for a ride in it, drove and idled great. Went to start it later and alarm went off, it turned off after a minute but now the car wont start, battery...

This is a wild guess, but disconnect the positive terminal from your battery. Touch the cable (that went to the positive) to the negative, to drain out any capacitor in the system that is holding charge. I think you have to short it that way for about 10 seconds. Reconnect cable to positive and start car.

That will reset your computer and should reset the alarm as well.

1990 Volkswagon Jetta won't turn back on after long drive.

Then you have a start up problem and it reside with the cold start valve,The cold start valve operates even if the vehicle is warmed up,the cold start valve can be plugged up,or even have a bad connection,The cold start valve operates by a thermotime switch. This switch located on the near bottom of the radiator may have gone bad or disconnected,Here is the easy cost effective route, replace them both,it will cost more to trouble shoot it than just replace it.

Everything resetting to zero

Low battery voltage. 11.5V min. For both radio and instrument cluster to cut out like that points to low voltage. Does your clock reset to 12:00 too? A scan readout is needed for assessing your problem. I'm sure there are DTC's stored in your ECU memory.

disconnect the battery for a few minutes. If this doesnt help you will need to get the code to see if you havea key/tumbler issue or the computer issue. Or try another key if available.

Clock/Mileage gage stay on even when car is off.. Is this Normal?

I have a Jetta 2005 and I just noticed that after this:
when my battery died after 7 hours playing my stereo, then I charged it for 30 minutes and my car could start on again. After that incident thet remote key started failing when I push the open button twice to open all doors. They remain closed, only passenger door open. Then I disconnected battery over 15 min to reset computer, and the clock and mileage gage remain on all time after that. Never remain on before it was disconnected and conneted again.
