From inside the trunk area, at the top of the wheel well, there is a back cover to remove, under the cover you'll find a 17mm nut, remove the nut and cupped washer, there should be 1 more 17mm nut to remove. Then from under the car, remove the thru bolt and nut. The strut should come out. take the old strut out and put the new one in.

Do i have to take off the oil pan to replace a rear main seal on a 88 cabriolet vw

Hi Sean, If we're talking about the engine and not the gearbox it is advisable to remove the sump, as when refitting it you can make sure that the sump gasket is not damaged. Its a lot easier than needing to do the job over to fix a leakage from the gasket. Regards John.

Help replacing the front struts on 89 VW Cab

You'll need to remove the upper strut mount nut. Unbolt the 2 bolts from strut to the wheel hub. Remove the strut unit from the car. You'll need a coil spring compressor to compress the spring to unscrew the strut bushing, remove the strut mount and remove the spring from the strut, install the spring to the new strut and reassemble. You'll be better off to get the whole strut, instead of the replacement cartridge, it's often hard to remove the old one from the old housing. Don't forget to replace the strut mount and strut bushing.
