Did you have a repair manual for your specific vehicle prior, during and after this repair ?
Some vehicles have a special tool that hold the cam sprockets in place while replacing the chain

How to change timing chain


make sure the engine is at TDC on compression stroke, remove all the parts to get to the timing gears, remove the bolts that fasten the cam gear to the camshaft, the crankshaft gear should just slide off but make sure you dont loose the keyway in the sump as this will cause a delay in the repair.
dont turn the engine at all when you are doing this as it will put your timing out, take the camgear off the shaft with the timing chain, you will be able to remove the timing chain now. when you replace the timing chain you need to put the chain onto the camgear and then onto the crankgear, there should be an arrow on each gear which has to line up without turning the engine, unless the crankgear has been moved you will only need to move the camgear on the chain (not the actual cam) until the arrows line up and it lines up with the retaining bolt holes for the camgear.

Can i remove the timing chain tensioner from the top of the motor on a 2000 cavalier 2.2l or is that only with a dual cam?


Hi Friend:

Your Timing Chain Tensioner is located in the Lower Front of your engine.

#1) you'll have to disconnect your negative Battery cable.

#2) Remove the Top Engine cover to give you better access to the Front of Engine.

#3) Then you'll need to remove your alternator and with wiring attached put it off to the Side you might have to tie it with a wire to secure it.

#4) then you'll need to remove your Power Steering Leave the Lines on it and Put it to the sideas well , Tie off if necessary.

#5) then Jack up the front of your car,make sure you Put Good Stands under the car to keep it secure.while you work under it.

#6) then remove the TWO front Oil Pan Bolts Only the very 2-Front ones.

#7) Then directly above the Oil pan front of the Engine you'll see your Crank Shaft Pulley Remove it, You will need a Puller to Remove it.then the Timing Chain Cover, There are Several bolts Holding it on to the front of the Engine.

#8) Remove ALL the Bolts on Timing over, then Take cover Off,It could be a Little Stubborn ,if All bolts are out for sure, Take a Small plastic mallet and Tap the Cover Easily,until it comes off.

#9) Now before you remove anything else there is a Timing Mark on the Cam Shaft and one on the Crank Shaft,NOTE: BESURE you line them marks up,The Cam Shaft Mark should be pointing Straight Down--And the Crankshaft Mark needs to be Pointing Straight up.and Lined up with the Top Timing Mark.If the are Not

NOTE: Rotate the Engine by Hand Turning the Sprockets until they are LINED Up.

Then Take off the Top Cam Shaft Mounting Bolts,then Pull Sproket and timing Chain at the Same Time.

Then Loosen the Chain Tensioner Bolt with out taking it ALL the Way OUT. then remove your Chain Tensioner.

If your this far i Recommend that you Replace The Timing Chain,Cam Sproket and Crankshaft Sproket as well.

If not the Install your new Chain Tensioner,And Just Simply Reverse the Un-Install Directions.To Put All back Together.

Do Replace the Timing Cover Seal. Using Proper Seal Remover and Installer.

Also before you put your Timing cover back on CLEAN the Surfaces of the Engine and the Cover.And Use a Gasket Sealer and Mount to Block ==Lining Up ALL your Timing Cover Bolt Holes. Let it set a Short time a Few Minutes at Least. To prevent Slipping when installing your Timing Case Cover.

1- Last Thing Torque your Timing Chain Tensioner at 89 Inch Pounds.Which rewuires a Torque Wrench.

And Torque ALL your Timing Cover Bolts at 97 Inch Pounds.Do NOT Over Tighten You'll Strip them.

MAKE Sure the Timing Marks are Still lined up.

I want ti install timing chain in 350 chevy. What TDC marks are used if i use Zoom timing chain whith 3 key way and i use 4 degrees adv. I want TDC with the 4 degrees at crank. I know i put both dots at...


The timing chain is not that fine, nor do you care about advance with the chain. A single link on the chain is more like 15 degrees, and you will have no trouble deciding which is the best fit.
TDC is always 0, and never 4 degrees advanced.
It is the ignition that is advanced, not the chain. To advance the breathing you would need to either change the cam, or get a variable chain sprocket. But again, you can not tell 4 degrees when putting a chain on. It changes that much at least when you take the slack out.

complex job chains have coloured links to line up with gears and a set number of links between timing marks, best get a manual or a professional to do job

Did you put the chain back on exactly like it was? I haven't seen a timing chain in years, anyway, if you didn't get that thing right, the car won't go 10 miles without causing major damage. Did you mark it some how to the cam marks and the crank marks? If you still have it open, check it out to be sure, line up the marks to the marks on the chain, if it has them, if not, You will have to put the engine at tdc, then roll the cams to their marks, get the chain on there, spin the engine by hand a couple dozen times, pull some spark plugs out to relive the compression. Hope this helps.

Im putting timing chain on my 93 chevy s10 pickup 4.3 and there are gears behind the timing chain what do I do


first thing i would do is make sure your timing marks are lined up before removing the chain and gears,,,turn it over by hand till they line up then remove the bolts in the cam and pull off the cam gear and chain,,you will probably need to use a prybar to get the bottom gear off,,,line up your timing marks and istall the new gears and chain

Well I just looked up the specs for you for the 2.7 ltr. I hope this is what you want.
Cam Caps 105 in.lbs.
Cam Sprocket 250 in.lbs.
Crank Dampener 125 ft.lbs.
Cylinder Head Cover 105 in.lbs.
Here is an illustration of the timing chain set up. Be aware these marks are lined up with the three sets of plated links on the chain. You should easily identify them if you have a new chain. You may have to clean an old chain to see them.

well not sure exactly why it wont line up use something to turn the crank and cam to appropiate position start sliding crank gear until cam gear is touching then start to push both at same time make sure your crank key and cam pin are bothin place On many OHV pushrod engines, the crankshaft sprocket is installed on the crankshaft nose and the crankshaft is rotated to position piston #1 at TDC. At this point, a mark stamped onto the crankshaft sprocket is pointing directly upward (toward the camshaft).
The camshaft sprocket is then temporarily bolted to the cam and used to rotate the cam until a mark stamped on the cam sprocket is pointing directly downward (toward the crankshaft). The sprocket is then removed from the cam (without allowing the cam to rotate).
The timing chain is looped over the cam gear, the mark on the cam gear is positioned directly downward, and the chain is looped around the crankshaft sprocket. When the cam sprocket is attached to the cam, the timing marks on the crank and cam sprockets should be pointing toward one another.
