Which speed sensor? I could be confusing models here but usually there are two. one sensor in the front and one in the rear.
Actually the speedometer head would not cause the limp home mode. The bad thing is that there are a lot of things that could cause the limp home mode from solenoids clogged in the transmission to a bad wire connection. When a machine goes into limp mode it automatically severs all the other connections such as to the speedometer.

Hi,
Your engine management and maybe even your transmission is controlled by the ECU. As such, many ECU units are fitted with a 'limp home mode'. When it detects that something semi-serious is wrong, it enters the limp mode, which means that the engine won't rev beyond a pre-programmed speed, you can't accelerate very fast, or you may indeed be speed-restricted to 40 mph or similar. The transmission may even stay in one or two gears. The alternative would be to either let you drive at regular speeds, with the danger of letting you trash your car or stopping you from going anywhere .
You should have a Check Engine light. Go to a major chain auto parts store and they should read the ‘code’ for free, then go to rdtiburon.com and ask what the code actually indicating or is really bad to your car. They will advise you what you ought to do.
Because you replaced the speed sensor and are still experiencing the problem, we suspect that you have a faulty speedometer cluster.
Please check this link and go through the article to have an indepth knowledge to your problem....

Speedometer behaves erratically (needles shoots down to 0) and forces transmission into limp in mode while driving.

the output speed sensor is going bad,or may have a broken wire on the connector.repair r the wire if so,or replace the sensor.Transmission goes into limp mode to protect it'self, and engine, from internal damage. repair this, and you should be good

Sounds like your car is in limp mode, which means its stuck in 2nd gear, basically you can get to where your going and that's bout it..problem is that there is bout 50 different reasons as to why this could happen, most common reason is a faulty speed sensor, does your speedometer work?, I believe there are 2 speed sensors on that car, if your speedo is working it may be the input speed sensor, the output speed sensor also runs the speedometer.. To be safe you need to have the codes scanned in the trans, if you have speed sensor codes you got lucky cause that's cheap compared to what it could be...

Can a bad o2 sensor (or fuel mixture) cause my passat to go into limp mode? P1196 (o2 sensor 1 bank 1) and P1813 solenoid 1 electrical transmission) are the codes I get. the car runs fine but the turbo...

check the spark plugs and wires. the turbo motors have an aluminum head that expands and contracts too quickly and cracks the ceramic insulator on the plugs causing the engine to run irratically when it starts making boost and drops into a safe mode. also throws the trans code.

Car won"t shift from second to third gear

Yes your car is in limp mode, but it's not necessarily an expensive problem.

The problem is usually caused by either a failed input speed sensor (35.00 retail) or output speed sensor (about $50.00 retail). If your speedometer isn't working it's the output speed sensor.

Either one takes just a few minutes to change but of course you'll get charged for an hour's labor. Good luck.

Trans

Check the speed sensor on the tranny cause if the speedometer is not working the tranny will not shift. The computer will not recognize that the transmission is in motion so will not shift.

01 malibu not shifting out of 2nd gear

Probably not a fluid issue. If the fluid is close to right, a little more or less won't matter. Is the speedometer working? If the speedo quits its because the trans output speed sensor has failed. This will cause the trans to lock into limp home mode. I've had good luck in these cases by buying the sensor (about $25) and put it in to see if it fixes the problem. $25 is a cheap experiment. The output speed sensor is very near the passenger side CV joint. Btw the trans and the firewall. Hard to reach. Easy to change. If the speedo is working the problem isn't the output sensor. Maybe the input speed sensor.

It may be a faulty speedometer with a short inside, or a short on speedometer wirings or connector.

Whenever car vibration cause the wiring to short, there you lose speedometer and trans functionality.

You need to access the speedometer connector and wirings to
instrument panel to fix this.

you said the speedometer is fried ...i take it that it dont work at all. this may be caused by a bad vehicle speed sensor or input or output speed sensor. this can also cause the tansmission to go into what is called a limp in mode. you need to have the codes read from the transmission controller

My 99 dodge stratus shift to 2 and stays until i turn key off and on i can manual shift into 1 2 3 until i actually move in forward. if unhooked the battery already it didn't work any anserwer.

One or both of the speed sensors on transmission are bad. One is an input sensor, the other is the output sensor. If either one of these shows an open circuit (which they do when they go bad), then the transmission goes into Limp-Home mode and stays in 2nd gear. Those sensors are cheap enough where you should just go ahead and change both of them.
