Should not be over 14.50 volts. Sounds like you have a bad voltage regulator.

How can I replace alternator?

you may want to consider a little more troubleshooting before you just replace the alternator , the reason being the charge rate is controlled by a device called a voltage regulator , on most Chrysler and Gm vehicles this device is internal to the alternator , but in the ford case they are an external device , a 460 is an older engine size so im guessing this vehicle was made sometime in the 70's ?? if this is true , ive seen a ton of charging problems show up due to corrosion (rust) on the back of the voltage regulator (common rusting on 70 models) , as its critical this module is grounded clean/ tight and rust free to vehicle body or it will not work properly also if vehicle is made prior to 1975 then the regulator is adjustable (this is evidenced by the removable top on module ) so it might be that it only needs adjustment ?? , proper charging rates should be , engine at less than 650 rpms all accessory's full on (headlights,heaterblower,etc. ) battery should hold at 12 volts measured at battery , and a throttle up to over 1500 rpm to not exceed 14 volts measured at battery (13.8 volt) is factory setting but that's tough to see that fine

On my 1991 camery the alternator was not charging battery. I replaced old alternator with NAPA rebuid. Now it charges between 16 to 18 volts, and when above 2000 rpm the break and batt charge lights both...

I think the voltage regulator on your replacement alternator is faulty, and is not holding voltage down far enough. 16-18 volts is far too much.

have you had battery tested to see if holding charge ? most battery retailers will be able to do this for free,if ok check that the alternater is charging at the correct rate 13-13.75 volts is best

The light will come on if the system is over charging. No system I know of charges at 18 volts. That is way too much. You need to have the alternator checked out. Most system charge at 14.5 to 15 volts at the most. You will burn out something major if not fixed. you can go by most auto part stores and they will check it out for free.

I have a 1990 dodge caravan that will not charge

use a volt meter and check the voltage with the engine off. should be 12 volts then check again with engine running it should be 13 to 15 volts if no then the pcm is at fault. the voltage regulator is inside the computer control and you will need to have it checked out at a dealership. if bad will have to replace the computer on van to correct the charging system. hope this will help!!!

No this is not good.Have your charging system checked.Could just be a gauge problem or a alternator.But you should get it checked.Generally 16 volts is the highest it should be.Good luck.

Alternator test said good, put on car & not charging ,battery test good amp meter decrease`s

Remove and clean battery cables , replace bolts. Check for power going to the alt. it will not charge unless is has power in the connector wire. When alt is tested get them to tell you how many amps it is putting out, not volts. 12 volts will not charge a battery unless you have the correct amount of amps. I had a napa alt and had this trouble twice. The guy said it was good it had over 12 volts output, but it would not charge battery. I fixed mine with a better quality alt. from another store.

Meter Explanation

You are correct on all accounts. A high number means you dying battery is sucking more juice from the Schumacker. A low number means the battery is not as thirsty. That's how I always think of how to read the meter on mine. Slow charge is a better, deeper charge. The quick charge will get you going, but you should maybe follow it up using the normal mode - car alternator and prolonged drive time. I never use quick charge, personally.
