Transmission slips but when i shut engine off and restart it will work for a short while then slip again. any thoughts?

Transmission bands are slipping and requires an trans inspection. Most trans shops will give you the inspection for free when you tell them your bands are slipping. This is a low cost minor adjustment that doesn't require removing the transmission unless further problems are discovered after the inspection. They will need to make this adjustment for a inside peak to make a proper determination.

Band adjustment, how many turns out on 1987 300zx

Transmission Bands are adjusted when you rebuild a trans

They do not wear enough to need adjustment

Two things happen

If you turn the screw the wrong way, parts fall inside the trans
& you can't get it back together

Next-- if you need to adjust the band or bands, it is time for a rebuild, as many many parts are worn, long before the slightest band wear.

Not until you have done all the necessary checks. Check that the oil is bright cherry red and not tan. Have a pressure test done on the transmission to check for internal faults. Have the fault codes read to check for transmission faults (TCM ) check oil level. Remove the pan and clean out the filter./ If there is band and clutch pack linings in the filter then you may have to have the box overhauled.. If not adjust the bands and clutch packs . After all the checks are done then and only then should you consider a replacement transmission and only from accredited transmission shops

1988 ford van transmission suddenly slipping

Check your fluid level. Then for physically taking action, some models have adjustable transmission bands inside the trans. These may be reached inside the trans when changing the screen filters or cleaning them. Some models have external adjusters. Typically involving tightening the bands to a certain torque amount and then backing off the adjuster a specified number of turns.

There are some chemical additives of questionable value claiming to fix these problems.

I would go to 3 places for estimates. Some transmissions have no adjustments and your trans may be on its last leg. Used transmissions out of a wreck or a Rebuild may be options.

I have a 1995 saturn and my trans started slipping so i replaced the external filter and the fluid and and a bottle of lucas treatment but it is still slipping . its not overfull or underfull .

if it starts to slip it possibly needs to get overhauled.automatic trans systems work with very small tolerances. there are bands inside and if they are worn out performance degrades. check your fluid. if it either has a bad smell or debris inside, no luck.

but give it a try and get its bands adjusted. this procedure called band adjustment. after removing A T pan, it is adjusted by screws. mechanics know how to do and they require torque wrench to do this.

Adjusting trans bands 1994 jeep grand cherokee 6 cylinder need picture of what to do

Who said you could do that? He should have also told you how! Get a bottle of lucas trans slip for 12$ and that is the only thing that will revive a slipping trans, or take it to a tranny shop and have it rebuilt

94 probly has alot of miles on that trans with out the proper changes that should have been done at every 40k miles.
