Question about Toyota RAV4

1 Answer

98 Toyota Rav4 - 5 speed manual..just heard someone say that 5th gear often needs replacing on this indeed a common problem, and if so is there any special maintenance or something to keep it from happening? I like to use Amsoil full synthetic tranny oil, but my Rav is already pretty in about 130,000 miles

I also use Amsoil synthetic in my manuals. I would still switch to it for your RAV4. The 5th gear issue can be fixed for relatively cheap and it's really not that difficult of a repair either. So i would just change the tranny fluid and run it til it needs to be fixed. 3rd and 5th gear usually go first because they are most used. repairing the 5th gear problem doesn't even require you to remove the tranny.
Thank you,

I have a zafira club 1.6 which seems to have no 5th gear. I can enter 5th whilst driving without the clutch. Any ideas please.

because of the close gear ratios and the synchronisation action ,it is possible to change gears without the clutch if the engine rpm's and road speed are close matched. If you put it in 5th gear and the engine rpm's increase without an increase in road speed (gear does not engage) then it is possible that the gear on the out put shaft is stripped. This is a common problem in vehicles where 5th gear is engaged and the vehicle load and speed is excessive inducing excessive wear on the teeth of the gear causing them to fail

91 maximal 5 speed won't go into 1st 3rd and 5th

I had same problem with mine when I first got it. It's really quite a simple fix, if indeed it is the same problem. Anyway you need to jack up the front end and support it on both sides with jack stands. crawl up underneath the car and look for where your gear shifter comes down through the floor of the car. follow the linkage, and check that its nice and tight. I am telling you this from memory so sorry for the vagueness, but there are two pretty big screws holding it in place. Maybe they are lose or as it was in my case, one fell out. I replaced the screw and tightened the other and voila! worked beautifully. Hope this helps.
