Question about 1994 Saturn Sl

1 Answer

I've got a 1994 Saturn SL 4 door and the other day we drove it uphill in it's "Performance" mode. We got where we were going, parked it for like an hour, came back and started it. Noticed a strange clanking coming from under the hood. We thought nothing of it until it started to get louder and louder the farther we drove it. It kind of disappears at about 35mph, but comes back around 45mpg. Very annoying. Had someone else listen to it today because it was having issues getting uphill, or even accelerating, and they said it might be a broken valve/rod. Could I get a second opinion on here? We did verify it was coming from the engine block and got louder when the engine was revved. Any help is greatly appreciated!!! :D

Sounds like a connecting rod bearing, I had a 95 SC2 with the same problem. You can pull the valve cover and look at everything on top.

You need to have the fault codes read with a OBD2 code reader or scanner, that is how you find out what system in the computer controlled engine is acting up.

For an unknown reason the gearbox has put it's self into "Limp" mode, this could be die to an issue with a sensor or a clogged filter, Check the state of your fluid and it may need a filter change and a fluid flush.

Wipers on my 1994 Saturn SL1 (SOHC) sedan start fine, but then won't turn off. Is it more likely the motor or the switch? Is there something else to be looking at?

the wiper motor assembly has a park sensor, and if this sensor fails, it will not let wipers park or shut off. ( replace wiper motor assembly).

How to recharge freon on a 1994 SL 1 Saturn

On a car that old you really should have a good tech look at it and make sure the components are all functional. You can recharge a leaky system and it will be inop again in a few days.

My saturn sl2 is shifting hard on his bad days

Yes, with another transmission...they have a problem with the valve body going bad. Go with a junk yard trany. Just make sure that it has low mileage. $700 is a ball park figure...$700 for labor.
