How do you install a alternator in a toyota echo?

-disconnect battery (-) terminal.
-remove plastic cover to the left of the radiator(when looking from the front)
-loosen off 12mm bolt from top of alternator
-loosen off 14mm bolt from bottom of alternator
-disconnect wiring harness at alternator and remove 10mm nut holding the main wire.
Push alternator towards engine to slacken belt tension, then remove belt
-finish removing 12mm and 14mm bolts and remove alternator from the car.
-Replace in reverse order.
When tightening belt tension becareful what you pry against. You can easily damage the oil control solenoid the controls the camshaft.

Engine oil problem

Whoa! Never remove the oil filter while the motor is running. Alot of vehicles have valve cover leakage and it is easily repaired with a new valve cover gasket. It is completely normal for the dipstick to be dry until the motor is off and all oil has drained from the upper compartments of the engine including the area where the oil lubricates the valve guides. Most mechanics will place the vehicle on a completely level area and then wait 15 minutes or so after the motor is off to check the oil. The dipstick will always show that you have low oil if you check it while the motor is running as the oil is elsewhere doing it's job. If you replace your valve cover gasket be sure to not overtighten and tighten in a random crisscross pattern so that you have uniform pressure all along the gasket. There are torque guides for this and you can usually get them from your local parts house. Buy a good torque wrench also.
