Question about 2002 Dodge Caravan

1 Answer

The engine light came on and the vehicle starting vibrating pretty hard. Originally thought it was the driver side motor mount that was worn out, however that was not the case. I then suspected it was the wires and/or plugs causing the problem so I changed the plugs and wire. Number 5 seems to be the problem as it was a little oily and possibly cracked. I took to Autozone to diagnose and it turns out to be number 5 isn't connecting. I had Autozone do a diagnostic check and the confirmed number 5 was the issue. It kind wobbles like it's out of alignment, but mainly when excelerate. Going on flat roads or downhill it is much better but when having to add power it sounds like it's definitely missing. I've been offered much advice from my neighbors that play around with their cars, but no one can seem to pinpoint exactly what it is. What could be my problem?

Remove rear valve cover and inspect valve rail(train) and ensure all bolts are tight and if lucky none are broken, but l suspect the latter. let me know what you find and repair needed.

Steering wheel vibrates when Im stopped at a light

You may have front brake rotors which are slightly warped. The ABS only comes into play under very hard brakeing conditions. Typically you may also feel a slight pulse in the brake pedal as you slow down. That would be my best guess. If you have a vibration when you are stopped, that may be a motor mount issue. Either the front and/or rear mount may be weak. They are designed to isolate small engine vibrations you might feel when the car is at a stand still The motor mounts are designed to isolate small engine vibrations at a stand still at idle as well as limit the amount of travel the engine can make under a load. As a car gets older, the rubber which is what the mounts are made of get harder and often collapse slightly and can cause your condition because they are no longer plyable.Maybe this might shed some light on your problem. Good luck.

Will a worn out motor mount make the van idle rough or vibrate the car?

Have somebody stand in front of van with the hood open and watch the motor while you start the van.Put the emergency brake on and your foot on the brake, shift into D keeping your foot on the brake with your other foot give the engine a little gas and watch the motor. If a motor mount is broke the motor will lift up a little on the broken side.Be careful!

Rattling behind engine driver side

you may have bumped a heat shield causeing the weld to break, So it will vibrate off and on. Start the vehicle get some one to hit the gas a few time see if you can here the noise the reveing of the engen should cause movement on the moter mounts enoughf to cause the noise. DO NOT OVER REV> THE MOTOR. Also you will need the hood raised.

Get a friend to open the hood and look at the engine go up or down in the engine compartment when the brakes are firmly applied and switching between reverse and drive. Look for the motor mounts for behavior where tears exist in the rubber.

It's your motor & transmission mounts - relatively inexpensive.
Here is where you can get all 4 mounts for your car - AUTOMATIC transmission: http://dodge-car-parts.yogiautoparts.com...11_17_2012_8_13_31_pm.jpg
If you feel like reading, here is a bit of information about the function of these mounts on a car:

The purpose of engine motor transmission mounts: Most mounts made of metal and rubber, many newer model mounts are filled with hydraulic fluid, some advance hydraulic mounts come with electronic variable speed control by ECM engine control module. The basic design are the same to support between engine, transmission and subframe. They work hard to keep engine and transmission running smooth minimizing the amount of rattling and vibration from acceleration and stops. At the same time mounts are supporting all major power train systems keeping all mechanical components in balance level and position. Motor mounts are extremely important vehicle parts that stabilize and align a vehicle engine inside the engine compartment. Although small in size and relatively cheap in cost, motor mounts can cause tremendous mechanical problems if they break or go bad. Engine motor mounts are small parts that are used to stabilize and properly align a vehicle engine. When motor mounts go bad, they can cause a variety of symptoms, ranging from mechanical damage to excessive engine noise.

I have a 1999 sunfire and when going slow speeds it has a vibration/shimmy in the front end. What could this be?

A worn or broken motor mount will cause a vibration in the front end at low speeds. With the vehicle turned off and motor cool you can grab the motor and attempt to rock it from front to back and side to side. If there is some significant play there then a motor mount is not doing it's job and will need to be replaced.

02 Lancer ES help with diagnosing left side of Engine Vibration noise.

sounds more like a wheel bearing, jack the car up and support with axle stands, then grab the front left wheel at both sides and shake it hard.then grab it at the top and bottom and shake it hard.if a knocking can be felt through the wheel then its most likely a wheel bearing.repeat the test for the rear wheel.also with the vehicle jacked up,spin the wheel and put your ear next to it,if it makes a dry whirring or grinding sound as it spins, this is a symptom of a worn wheel bearing

Vibrating Doors

You may need new motor mounts...if they are worn out this would allow additonal vibration from the engine to transfer to the vehicle body & doors . If it is 4WD then also check underneath for the center driveshaft mount. Higher mileage cars tend to have the mounts lose there ability to dampen engine movement upon engagement.

Any shop should be able to push on the brake and engage the transmission in drive or reverse and watch the whole vibration event happen.

Then it becomes a determination of which mounts to replace.
