What is over drive for?

Overdrive is used for fuel economy. Normally, the highest gear on a vehicle has the engine-to-transmission ratio at 1:1, meaning for each revolution of the engine, you get one revolution of the driveshaft. This normally provides best fuel economy. To improve on this, overdrive actually gears even higher than 1:1, meaning that you get a bit more than one revolution of the driveshaft for each revolution of the engine. This can improve fuel mileage, but also has risks - the engine can easily bog down under heavier load conditions or on inclines. Most vehicles that used O/D, one you shift into it, use it when the engine load allows for it, and will automatically shift down to the normal Drive range when needed.

Sprocket gears up arrows upside down crank at tdc ,removed belt, replaced water pump ready to install gears back on.

No. Make sure it lines back up. Some vehicles are two revolutions of the crank to one rev for the cam/s. Some are four rev to one. If they don't line up. Reset the timing. If it doesn't line up, At best it won't start. At worse you could trash the engine,Interference engine. Some engines go off the chain. It could take up to 32 revolutions to bring the marks back in line.

    Gear ratio rearend

The pining noise you are hearing is detonation in the engine and comes from incorrect air/fuel ratio making the engine run too lean, It is spontaneous combustion occurring before spark and tends to drive the piston back down the bore. It is detrimental to the engine and should be rectified asap. Run fault codes and look for sensor problems. Vin numbers are unlikely to show the gear ratio of the rear end as there are 4 ratios for each model of car. Jack up on side of the rear . count the number of turns the pinion does for each revolution of the wheel . Divide that by 2 ( side gears in diff carrier multiply by 2 when driving one wheel)and you will get the ratio. So 10 revolutions of the tire gives 35.5. revolutions at the pinion equals to 17.5 or a ratio of 1.75: 1 ratio

    Tachometer is always moving

Well if your driving this is normal because it reads how many revolutions your engine is going like say how many revolutions per second.
If it's caused by driving or idling it's normal but if it moves up and down a lot while idling then there may be a problem with the timing.
