Question about 1990 Jaguar XJ6

1 Answer

I have a 1990 Jaguar Sovereign, 98,000 miles. The problem I'm having is the engine starts and runs, but it lopes at idle and runs rough, seems to be running too rich. I was getting fault codes 44, 37, and 26. Changed the O2 sensor, now I'm just getting code 26. Any thoughts? Thanks, richinmaine

I would change the air filter and clean the fine mesh covering the air flow control unit.
Make sure the connections are good as the sensor screen is tied to the O2 sensor. A new O2 sensor and dirty screen would give you poor fuel burning as the air fuel mix would be bad, and the O2 sensor would read the need for more fuel.......poor economy and running rough as it would not be clean burning.

A couple of possible problems, low compression on one or more cylinders, possibly a burned valve, possible headgasket leaks, have the compression tested and checked for a headgasket leak, both of these conditions would cause a rough idle and then seem to run normally when warmed up.

With the car in key position 2, the position right before you turn it to start, hit the VCM button on the right trip meter, you will get a code.

Check the exhaust manifold gasket. I have a 2003 SVT Focus I had a problem with it loping at low RPMs. I had a free flow exhaust system. When I bought a new exhaust manifold I replaced the gasket and the problem went away.
