Question about Acura Integra

2 Answers

Hello. I have a 93 acura integra that seems to have developed some electrical issues. These are intermittant problems that are getting worse. Started out where the clock would dim and or blink when you let off the gas, also the temperature guage shoots up really hot then comes back down and bounces hot to normal a little bit and the abs light would also come on. The radio also blinks off and on with the clock. Then they return to normal after you go a little bit. Now, sometimes the car will not start, but the headlights seem bright and you will hear a clicking sound on the passenger side floor by where the cpu is.Then other times the car starts and runs good, no problems. Now the last time after having the car not start and we got it going the speedometer read 40mph while sitting still and about 80mph when going about 40. When the car doesn,t start we can usually get it going if we wait a couple of minutes and try again and or mess with the battery cables a little bit. Why the lights dimming would seem a lot like a bad battery or alternator the wacky guages really have me confused. This is my sons car and he has messed with it a lot putting in an aftermarket radiator and fan, springs, air intake, exhaust, all the mods kids do to these integras. We also had a the tranny replaced but the clock and temperature guage started before the tranny. The not starting and the cpu clicking started right after the tranny replace. We also put in a new thermostat but the temp guage still goes whacky. Also going in reverse seems to set off these problems more frequently. Any suggestions?? Thanks Rob

    thanks for the suggestions

we took the battery out and had it checked, it was fine

    recleaned all the terrminals

    checked the starter connections

disconnected the fan we put in

none of this made any difference

quirkey thing, the speedometer now is starting to go faster, now up to 140mph when going about 35

    any more suggestions

    Thanks, Rob

You own a great car that has some issues. First I think you need to check and most likely have checked your FUSIBLE LINKS - These are the kinds of things moving around the battery cable can effect. Check for RECALLS too - this can save you thousands.
I would certainly have the transmission mechanic look at his work and review it for loose or exposed wires.
Sadly without a hands on inspection we can only do so much. How about you add to the mix a new battery and check the charging system as well and get back to me if none of this works. As you know without a hands on inspection there is little I can do other than give direction.
Best of it

Holy moly!! The first place to check is the battery. Make sure ALL connections are clean and tight, no corrosion, and remove all other aftermarket connections(just temporarily). Have the battery tested out of the car. The one thing that all these have in common is the battery. Once the battery has been tested and/or replaced, double check all connections at the starter(which would have been removed to get to the transmission) for being tight and clean. Let me know what you find.

Clutch fixed after oil change?

I think maybe it was a freak thing that happened. The clutch has nothing to do with the motor oil. What I would say was wrong with the clutch was that the clutch fluid was leaking or you has a bad clutch adjustment that just kept getting worse and worse. In your case, i guess your car just wanted an oil change. Good luck!

My 1990 acura integra wants to start but won't turn over. A couple of times it has started then dies. I'd keep trying to start it until it finally turns over and starts without dying. Could the fuel filter...

It's hard to know whether or not this is a fuel issue or a spark issue. Here is where I'd start:

Have a mechanic check your fuel pressure to make sure you're getting fuel. An intermittent starting issue could point to a clogged fuel filter. This would be more likely than the pump.

With the age of the car, a faulty main relay could also be the culprit. They are notoriously bad on Acuras of that age. The solder joints break and they will work one minute and not allow the car to start the next. (starter will turn the engine over but not "catch")

If this problem happens more often when the weather is hot or cold, it points toward the main relay. Good luck.
