What causes insuficent egr flow?

Probably partially clogged tube, or sludge build up in intake manifold. Must take apart and look in these areas. I assume this is a high mileage vehicle.

1997 ford expedition 5.4. no suction on vacum hose pluging into my egr valve.

Follow the hose it runs to the DPFE (egr position sensor). See if hoses are cracked, shrunk or missing. There is an in & out. They need to be a special silicone vacuum hose made for this setup. Usually the replacement silicone vacuum hose is orange. It is available at most autoparts stores. If all sections of hose are ok, either DPFE (egr position sensor) or egr solenoid is bad. There should be a check engine light on for any one of these problems as they each have their own code.

2001 f 150 code po401

P0401 OBD-II Trouble Code - Insufficient EGR Flow

What does that mean?
EGR stands for Exhaust Gas Recirculation. It is part of the vehicle emmissions system, and is used to reduce combustion temperature and pressure to control Oxides of Nitrogen. There are generally three parts to the EGR system: the EGR valve, an actuator solenoid, and a differential pressure sensor EGR (DPFE).

These things work together to deliver the correct amount of recirculation based on engine temperature, load, etc. The P0401 code means that OBD detected an insufficient amount of EGR.

Symptoms
You may notice drivability problems such as pinging (a.k.a. pre-ignition knock) when the engine is under load or the vehicle is at higher speeds. There may also be other symptoms.

Causes
A code P0401 most likely means one or more of the following has happened:
* The DPFE (differential pressure feedback EGR) sensor is faulty and needs to be replaced
* There is a blockage in the EGR (tube), most likely carbon buildup
* The EGR valve is faulty
* The EGR valve may not be opening due to a lack of vaccuum

Possible Solutions
In fixing this code, it is quite common for people to just replace the EGR valve only to have the OBD code return. The EGR valve is not always the culprit.
* Use a vacuum pump and pull the EGR valve open while monitoring engine RPM's & DPFE voltage. There should be a noticable difference in RPM's with the EGR open
* Clean out the EGR valve and/or tubing to remove deposits
* Check the voltage at the DPFE, compare to specified values (refer to a repair manual for your specific model)
* Replace the DPFE sensor (with a good quality / OEM one)
* Replace the EGR valve

Re-Check the possible solutions and tell us news (remember rated this).

I have a 99 Windstar 3.8L Keep getting DTC PO401 have replaced DPFE EGR Valve and EGR tube still keep getting Code PO401

Does the egr vavle open ? You will need to use a scanner to test the dpfe voltage when the egr valve is energized you should read around 3.5 4.00 volts. Also you could remove the vacume line from the egr valve and with the engine running you should see around 100 rpm drop in engine rpm at least this would indicate the egr valve is capable of flowing egr gases through the system to the cylinders.

Lack of power, exhaust smoke and engine miss firing, EGR Valve has been removed and cleaned, new EGR Valve was fitted, made no difference, old EGR Valve refitted, car runs with no exhaust smoke and no miss...

Just an idea but the Ford Mondeo ( european car ) from which I believe your engine
is taken has a habit of splitting a low pressure tube at the back
of the engine this is a relatively
cheap, easy fix. The other symptom this used to throw up was a
little more black smoke from the exhaust and a pacing/ surging from
the engine.

Engine check light, code 401 low egr vacum egr

The EGR and the lift sensor may look perfect from the outside but the under side of the EGR valve and the EGR passage (small tube) are the REAL WORKING parts.

The carbon inside the EGR passage tube and the underside of the EGR valve must to clean out.

Make sure you has a NEW EGR gasket before you start the job.

It's a 2-3 hours job.

If you do not clean the EGR passage tube the Nox emission will get higher (check you past emission reports).

2000 mazda 626 engine light is on took it to the dealer found an egr valve problem they "fix" it light went on again took it back they check it found that the manifold was bad "fix" it...

do you see if the manifold was cracked? usually the problem is not just the egr valve it has a modulator it is either electronic or vacum controlled, now the right way to check or the first thing to do is if there is vacum at the valve and from there check to see if there is vacum at the egr valve only wheren you rev the engine aroun 2000 to 2500 rpm , but i suggest you not to rev the engine at this rate too long if the valve opens thne the next thing to do is remove the valve and makd sure that the egr port is not clogged up with carbon if it is plugged up you can just knock them off using a small screw driver or such and clean the passage with a wire brush and put the valve back always make sure that you put it back using a new egr valve gasket.

regarding the noise make sure that all other tubing that go from the exhaust manifold is not broken it is not just the muffler that is involved in the exhaust sys that keeps the noise down!!!
