Question about 1999 Ford F250 Regular Cab

1999 Ford truck 7.3 diesel, hard to start in the morning, will only start with spray start. Already changed the valve coners wire harness and new glow plugs, Ford had a recall on the camcenser and did that

If it is not getting power to the plugs witch it most likely isnt check your selinoids they are located on the top of the engine check and see if power is getting there and if that is all fine then you may be low on compression you can check this with no tools for blow by. when engine is running remove oil filler cap and look for puffs of white smoke if it is a consistant slight haze or little smoke that is normal but if it is poring smoke and puffing then you have one or more pistons or rings hurt. any more than a little stream of smoke is a culprit of worn out engine and needs rebuild. and if that is fine you may want to check your high pressure oil as that operates the injectors and is vary thick when cold you can also change this by taking an alen key and removing the small cap on top of the hpop (high pressure oil pump) resevior and sucking the old oil out with a seringe or another type of evacuator. then replace oil with new oil (same as what you use for engine) and then start engine run for about five minutes and do it again about three or four times. there is 3 qourts on the top of engine that run through the heads and HPOP system from navistar it was supposed to cycle throgh the bottom end oil but it never really does thats why when you change your oil and check it right after you start truck it is black again. i have more remidies but not to much more space message back if needed

Hi :) Check the wiring harness for a fuel pump relay that is on the firewall. The trans is computer controlled (shift points, firmness, ect). You would either need to run a TBI motor from a '92-95 3-4 or 1-ton truck and get the computer to go with it. Then the new gas computer can run the trans. You will also need to swap the torque converter to a gas unit instead of the diesel. OR get whatever motor you want, and then use a stand-alone controller for the trans. They cost about $600+ for the controller. Still need to do the torque converter. You could run the diesel TC but it just wouldn't perform to full potential.It will bolt up, but a diesel transmission is different from a gas transmission. Diesels shift way earlier and only go to 3500 rpm max. If yo u do the engine swap, you will need a new valve body in the transmission. I have a 700R4 in a 1935 Ford truck. It never shifted right unless I drove it manually. It always bogged down. I took the transmission to 5 different shops and no one could figure it out. After 6 years, I was telling a buddy about it and he had me bring it to his shop. He changed the valve body (was a diesel trans and I didn't know when I bought it at an auto swap) to a corvette valve body and now the truck runs great.

Try replacing the fuel filter and check the fuel pressure at the shredder valve. Low fuel pressure from a week fuel pump or dirty fuel filter will cause hard starts, a bad ground will also do the same thing so check the ground wire for the fuel pump which is separate from the main wire harness to the fuel pump sending unit.

2000 ford super duty 7.3 diesel will not cold start


you need to have the engine coolant switch checked,since the computer relies solely on sensors,the ect tells the computer how cold or hot it is so the computer will make it a rich or lean mixture to start the engine,if it tells the computer that it is 75 degrees the computer will lean the mixture like starting a car in the winter without a choke.

Hard to start on cold mornings but starts fine when warm


The cold start valve is not operating correctly. Either the engine coolant temperature sensor is bad or the cold start valve itself is bad. You can check the engine coolant temperature sensor by going to radio shack or any electronic store and purchase a 15k ohm or higher resistor. Disconnect the engine coolant temperature sensor (ECTS) harness. Bridge the 2 female spade connections in the harness with the resistor. Start the engine. If the engine starts you need to replace the ECTS. If the engine is still hard to start, you need to remove the cold start valve, (wear safety goggles, and whatever you do don't smoke) place the cold start valve in a glass and have someone crank the engine. You should see gas coming out from the cold start valve. If not take a ohm meter and measure the terminal at the cold start valve after disconnecting the wire harness. The meter should read 25 ohms. If it doesn't replace the cold start valve.

For a short term solution, you could run a small electric heater within the engine compartment which will keep everything nice and warm for your early morning starts.
I remember my father using an extension trouble light and leaving it under the engine compartment during the winters.

Glow plugs


glow plug wire harness under valve covers often deteriorates causing no glow plug heating. The connectors and wire terminals are available from Ford as a kit or individually. Do not replace the harness. $600!
Still need the fuse panel circuit? Look in owner manual.
glow plugs use a relay too.
