Question about 2002 Dodge Durango

1 Answer

Our 2002 Dodge Durango Sport keeps stalling out, usually when stopped for a minute (ie a light). The "engine" icon appears, I had a diagnostic test done, tune up with new plugs, but still same problem.

Clean the throttle body

I had that problem with mine. I noticed at a stop the rpm's would rise and fall 200 -300 rpms then stall. I changed the throttle positioning sensor and it works fine now.

First off, how new is your battery and how many miles on the D? Dodge vehicles are very sensitive to a failing battery. Have it load tested, and if is the least bit flaky, replace it.

After that, the TPS or throttle postion sensor is your next.

As far as the revving up and down above 3000 rpm goes, that is the PCM protecting the engine from over revving.

2002 dodge durango engine light on. after diagnostic test.results indicate evaporator hoses are leaking

Check your gas cap first.

Replace the cap and have the code cleared at Autozone. If the problem comes back, look for cracks in the lines between the gas tank and the evap canister behind the battery.

Why does my 2005 dodge durango keep stalling and the check engine light comes off and on ocasionally

The check engine light indicates that you have a failing system that is monitored by the cars computer(s). In this case it is probably a sensor that controls fuel or ignition to the engine. You can probably go to a nearby auto parts store and have the code read from the computer for free. If you do this, it will give you and idea where to start your diagnosis. If you post the code to this forum, you will likely receive numerous ideas on where to start looking and how to repair the problem.

Hope this helps.

Do you know how to test electrical circuits ? Is the PCM - engine computer controlling the coils ? Test with a test light ! One side has B+ voltage the dark green with orange stripe wire ,the other goes to the PCM , which will suppy a ground when triggered . You can test this with a test light . or you can buy a noid light at the parts store . If you replaced the coil an spark plug an that code comes back ,could have a burnt driver inside the computer , test it first !

2002 durango has recently started to stall after it has been filled up. today it would not stay running unless foot was on the gas at all times

try this.
Here is the common cause of surges, stalls at stops, slow idle speed, erratic idle speed, rough idle and engine hesitation (and other problems), it is in most cases the idle speed control air-bypass valve and or throttle valve and upper intake, these area's get full of gunk and combustion residue over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.

1999 dodge durango is hard to start. Starts with rough idle with some backfire, then idles smooth. after sitting idle for a minute it will act as if wanting to stall on takeoff! Have changed the fuel pump...

FIrst have you tried giving the engine a tune up (ie replaced the spark plugs)

Also you need to check the condition of all the vacumn lines on the engine loss of vacumn can cause poor idling.

Check engine light sensors have been reset but don't show a reading

U will need to drive a mixture of stop and go, city low speed and freeway miles, this can take a week and 20-50 miles or so for the system to finish it's internal self testing. this is called a drive cycle test.
