How to change lock cylinder on 91' Ford F250

Lost keys for 91' Ford F250. Purchased new lock cylinder with keys, how do I change the lock cylinder? All instructions I have seen assume you still have keys and can turn to the run position to eject the old cylinder. So how can I remove the old lock cylinder without the keys?

Is there any risk of damaging more than the cylinder if you try and break the tumblers off using the pliers?
Or do you have any advice for drilling it out? I found a few tips, but no videos.

  • jabonelson Apr 27, 2010

What size of drill bit do you recommend i use? And when I drill, I drill just above the opening of where the key fits on the side where the tumblers are correct? I have watched a few videos and I think I have the gist of it.

You can grab the switch with pliers sometimes and break the tumblers of in the cylinder, if you can't get it to break, you can also drill it out. This is what we had to do on an 89 F-150 that the cylinder had worn out and broken on. You should be able to find some how-to's about drilling the cylinder online, maybe even some videos.

No, not really, the only thing that prevents it from turning is the tumblers in the cylinder. You will need a pretty stout pair of pliers with a good set of teeth on them. If you drill it, just don't go too deep, and drill straight. Basically what you are doing when you drill it out is the same things as if you break it with pliers, except you are drilling out the tumblers a little at a time with a drill bit instead of just snapping them.

Off the top of my head I don't know what size to use, maybe a 1/8" or so? You want one big enough to get the job done, but small enough you can control it. Yeah, sounds like you have the idea of it. Happy drilling :)

2006 ford f250. Is it possible to purchase a door cylinder and have it keyed to my factory keys? called local dealership and was told I have to purchase all new locks and ignition to have one key....

Depending on the vehicle manufacturer, there are some that you can change the keys inside the cylinders to match what you have. If the dealer said that you have to change all, then I'd go after market so it saves you a bit of money.

I lost my keys and i bought a new set of locks, now i changed the door locks but i am not able to get the ignition lock out, any suggestions?

You have to turn the key cylinder to the on position in order to remove it. You have a few options, you can call the dealer and have key cut by the vin, you could call a locksmith and have him cut a key to match the cylinder, or you can drill the original cylinder and tumblers out. If you choose to drill it out, you will still need to turn the mechanism inside to the o position before you can insert the new cylinder.

Use the key, if it wont turn try jerking the steering wheel in both directions while turning the key, sometimes when the wheel is turned when parked the key lock gets stuck due to pressure on the lock cylinder

My 92 f250 will not turn over with key, but will if you jump relay

The problem may be the actual ignition cylinder in the steering column.

Replaceing a lock cylinder in a ford explorer with no keys.

The least damage would be caused by a locksmith. You could break more than the lock cylinder if you try to drill it out yourself.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

Functional Lock

The following procedure applies to vehicles that have functional lock cylinders. Such cylinders either have a key available or known key numbers from which a key can be made.
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Turn the lock cylinder key to the RUN position.
  3. Using a 1/8 in. (3mm) diameter wire pin or a small drift, depress the lock cylinder retaining pin through the access hole in the upper steering column shroud (under the ignition lock cylinder) while pulling out on the lock cylinder. Remove the lock cylinder from the column.

Using the key, turn the ignition lock cylinder to the RUN position, then depress the retaining pin using a wire pin or small drift

To install:
  1. Install the lock cylinder by turning it to the RUN position and depressing the retaining pin. Insert the lock cylinder into its housing. Make sure the cylinder is fully seated and aligned in the interlocking washer before turning the key to the OFF position. This will permit the cylinder retaining pin to extend into the cylinder housing.
  2. Rotate the lock cylinder using the lock cylinder key, to ensure correct mechanical operation in all positions.
  3. Connect the negative battery cable.

Non-Functional Lock
The following procedure applies to vehicles in which the ignition lock is inoperative and the lock cylinder cannot be rotated due to a lost or broken key, unknown key number or a lock cylinder cap that has been damaged and/or broken to the extent that the lock cylinder cannot be rotated.

F 250 brakes

Does the red break light come on the dash like when the park break is applied?
If so the check your proportioning valve if the truck has an abs system then the valve will be called a rabs valve.( located on the frame rail under the driver side seat) Check the break lines on the front calipers to see if they are damaged they may have been pinched so bad that they will not release. Also check to see If the master cylinder was changed , if the break lines were connected to the master cylinder incorrectly or the wrong master cylinder was installed the breaks will apply themselves…please rate this if it helped thx…

92 F250 ignition tumbler can't remove

You need to remove the steering wheel and disassemble the steering column far enough to access the lock cylinder release tab from the inside. If you have already purchased a replacement cylinder, you can locate it quite easily.
