REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

See Figure 1

Fig. Fig. 1: Ignition switch mounting

CAUTION The Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) system must be disarmed before working around the steering column. Failure to do may cause accidental deployment of the air bag, resulting in unnecessary SIR system repairs and/or personal injury.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. If equipped, disable the SIR system.
  3. Remove the steering column.
  4. The ignition switch is located at the base of the steering column. Disconnect the vehicle wire harness from the ignition switch.
  5. Unfasten the mounting screws, then remove the ignition switch assembly.

To install:

WARNING When fasteners are removed, always reinstall them at the same location from which they were removed. If a fastener needs to be replaced, use the correct part number fastener for that application. If the correct part number is not available, a fastener of equal size and strength (or stronger) may be used. Fasteners that are to be reused, and those requiring thread locking compound will be called out. The correct torque value must be used when installing fasteners that require it. If the above conditions are not followed, parts or system damage could result.
  1. Position the ignition switch assembly.
  2. Install and tighten the 2 mounting screws.
  3. Connect the vehicle wire harness to the switch assembly.
  4. Install the steering column.
  5. Enable the SIR system.
  6. Connect the negative battery cable.

I'm undertand that you are talking about the Ignition Lock Cylinder the part where the key goes turn the switch to "ON". There is a square pin on the front of the switch (side closest to dash). Push the pin in and pull the cylinder out. Mine was locked so I had to drill it out.

The igintiion lock assmebly contains two components: a lock cylinder to deter theft and an electrical portion that supplies power to electrical components such as the radio, electric windows, and windshield wipers. The electrical portion of the ignition switch also provides power to the starter motor to start the engine.

The ignition lock is an anti-theft device that prevents a vehicle from being driven unless the ignition key is in the ignition switch. If the ignition key is not in the ignition switch, it 's impossible to turn the steering wheel.
To replace the ignition switch cylinder lock, the trim panels around the steering wheel are removed. Then the tamper-proof hardware that attaches the ignition lock assembly to the steering column is removed.

The ignition lock assembly is removed from the steering column, and the lock cylinder is replaced. The new ignition lock is reattached to the steering column, and the trim panels are replaced.

Here have other reference guide... The ignition switch is usually mounted to the steering column and is operated by a linkage rod.

NOTE On column-mounted ignition switches, don't confuse the switch with the lock cylinder and keys. The ignition switch is not normally visible. On some vehicles, the steering column support has to be removed and the column lowered to find the ignition switch. On others, the switch is accessible under the dash.

The ignition switch is operated by the key switch. Courtesy of Ford Motor Company. To replace the switch:

  • Remove the ignition switch wiring harness.
  • Unbolt it from its position.
  • Bolt the new switch into position.
  • Attach the witing harness.

Hope this helped.

not to be poss but why would you need an inertia switch in a '93 chev. Cavalier? And are you sure its a 3.0 not a 3.1? You planning on racing in it? Inertia switches are commonly used in moded cars for street racing as a pre turbo inject.

Look for the inline fuse link in the red wire from the battery . It looks like something was spliced into the wire. It's the fuselink.

2000 chev cavalier wont click or start could it be a relay

Could be the starter solenoid.
The key switch sends power to the solenoid thru the neutral safety switch. You would need to check for power on the purple wire at the solenoid when the key switch is in the start position.

Chev Cavalier 2003 only one rear turn/brake/hazard light

I have a 2002 Chev Cavalier that had the same exact problem. I replaced the bulb harness (purchased from a chevy dealership for around $5) which was fairly easy to do. I have had zero problems with it since.
