VW transporter/caravelle T4 - the rear door won't open

I've already tried to get at the mechanism from the inside - unfortunately it is all hidden behind the trim and you can only remove the trim with the door open!

The inside handle just moves without doing anything. There is a small square hole in the trim about halfway between the handle and the catch. I've looked in there with a torch and poked around, but I can't find anything there at all.

You can't see the grabber - in fact you can't see anything....

The key turns the lock without resistance to the locked or unlocked position, the outside handle lifts without resistance, but without releasing the catch. The inside handle also lifts without resistance, but also without releasing the catch.

The trim is rigid plastic (or possibly hardboard lined with vinyl), and I cannot get under it near the catch. There's no carpet there, just a heavy-duty plastic step, which is screwed down, but as it goes under the door, and also under the leisure-battery locker on one side and the fresh-water tank locker I can't see how to lift it.

This is a 1991 T4 - Westfalia California - the trim is screwed into the read door around the edge so without the door being open it is not possible to remove it without breaking it.

The trim is not available from Volkswagen anymore, and this is a relatively rare model in the UK - it's an import from Germany.

I have been told that the only possible way we can get to the catch is to cut an access hole in the trim

The exact model is Westfalia California - it was built on a 2.4 Diesel VW T4 Transporter/Caravelle.

It was manufactured and first used in Germany in 1991, and imported to the UK at the beginning of this year.

Hi.

On most VW te trim panel is held by clips located behind the edges of the trim. The clips are removed using putty knives or flat screwdrivers. On several models the trim is also secured by hidden screws, at the corners, or behind plastic masks. It is quite easy to damage the trim at this stage. On some newer models you cannot lift the trim with the door locked because the trim is latched under the door. In the latest VW mks you have to break and then replace the trim if you want to access the door lock.

After that you gain access to the C shaped lock that you can open with a big flat screwdriver. The lock must also be replaced.
Parts can be ordered from VW or purchased at a local part store.

Regards.

If you can open it with a key, then the relay or latch motor may be faulty. If you can't open it with a key or by the button, then the latch is likely stuck. It may have to be pried open. There may be a way to remove the rear panel from the inside and manually move the latch so the door opens, then you can lubricate the latch and check for any broken pieces or missing springs.

Hi! Try this, If you can go to the rear door from the inside and see the locking mecanism below you can try to bypass it using a flathead screwdriver. That may open it up and start the fixing for I suspect a faulty locking mechanism at the hatch. Hope this helps and good luck!

I thought of that too... Can you lift the carpet up near the locking mechanism coz i thought i saw an opening that may access the lock.

Hi! Thats what i thought about. But we are trying to find a way not to damage the trim unless you're willing to sacrifice it.

Well your going to have to remove the door panel to fix it. Your options are, remove the drivers seat to get the door panel off. Or break the door panel into pieces. I'd remove the seat.
