Take a few bolts out, disconnect a couple hoses(and maybe a few wires)--install new in reverse order. I know for sure that a repair manual would tell you how to do that. Chilton or Haynes, your choice. Do yourself a favor though and plan on buying a new pulley. Anytime you replace the pump you should replace the pulley.

I replaced the power steering pump on my 2004 ford f150 and jacked the truck up in the air and with the cap off I turned the wheels back and forth to bleed. the steering is still tight is there a bleeder...

Leave the cap on the pump
Pull the injector fuse & turn motor over,
that's it.
Still tight-- then you have to check for ball joints,
or steering rack
Should be changing power steering fluid every 3 years,
as well as transmission or they both fail

On startup a fault light comes on for about 15 seconds and is identified as a power steering fault.

Hello, There are a few things which can cause this fault. I have found several F150 trucks with small holes in the power steering reservoir line going to the oil cooler. You did not mention what model Ford you are driving, but I imagine the problem can happen with the Expedition, Explorer, or other Ford products.

There are some plastic clips holding the steering line to the frame on the F150. Under the clip apparently moisture or salt collects and forms pinholes in the metal portion of the line. There will be leaks but not enough to hit the ground, just a wet frame. An airlock forms in the line and it takes awhile for the Power steering pump to overcome the problem.

The next possibility would be old or dirty Power steering fluid, the bypass valving in the pump, or a bad sensor. I would check the fluid lines first, replace the fluid with the correct fluid for your vehicle, and if those 2 items do not help; look for the remaining problems. If it comes down to needing a pump replacement, I know the 2004 trucks require a pulley removal tool to switch pumps. Point is don't turn loose of what you have until you know the replacement part is complete.

I hope my solutions are very helpful in solving your problems.

1991 f-150 ford pickup truck power steering pump

Purchase a replacement pump at Autozone or Kragens. Remove and plug the two pressure lines. Loosen the adjustment braket. Pull the pump over to loosen the belt. Remove the belt. Remove the adjustment bracket. Remove the bolt holding the pump. Replace the pump. Put on the belt and tighten it until there is 3/8 in. flex. Refill the pump reservoir with power steering fluid.

My power steering is stiff on my 1988 ford f150

Does it make a whining sound while trying to steer? Your power steering pump may be going out. Or low on fluid.

4.9 litre ?? you having a laugh its a 10ton truck engine not a pick up -global warming machine, remove the pump/sender unit and check the gauze filter also look inside tank for a something floating around ,i think the idles is not a related problem to the vehicle losing power but their is a possibility you could have a problem with the little vac operated thing on the fuel injector line that allows the fuel through only when the engine is running

Have the trans flush and filter changed cost $129 and up to $200. Power steering pump check fluid level first. If the level is correct check belt for cracks and dry rott the belt may be slipping replace it. If squeel is still there then you need to replace the power steering pump.
