It should be hooked up to a splitter and then it should run to your battery

I have a 06 gmc envoy xl 4.2...battery meter fluctuates back and forth from 14 Down to 9. When it does this and u have to shut it off it will not start back up without a jump. Alternator and battery were...

Bad plug or broken wire at the plug, at the alternator. Pull the plug off the alternator. Turn the key on and check for power and ground at the leads. No reading, probe the wires a couple inches back. If a read there fix or replace the plug. If you have a 3 wire plug, best to use an ohm meter. Test each wire separately. At the pin and a couple inches back on the wire. This test may include testing the wire back to the PCM and fuse panel. You'll need wiring schematics for this. The PCM is what fields the alternator to charge and supply power when the engine is running.

Replaced alternator but battery light stays on the dash

This light on dash is telling you, alternator is not charging or current is not reaching battery. With a voltmeter check your alternator output at battery. It should be at least 13.5 volts. If less than that check output at back of alternator, big red wire bolted to alternator. If voltage is within specs. then you may either have a blown fuse, open(broken) big red wire from alternator to baterry. Check big red wire circuit integrity by proving back of alternator where wire bolts to alternator. With the engine not running, there should be battery voltage at that bolt/wire. If no voltage repair open in circuit, either a fuse or broken wire( usually). If still no output(13.5 volts) or more, check power ground to alternator plug. If these power ground check out ok, then you more than likely have a defective alternator.

Charging problem

Check that your alternator is actually charging the battery. With volt meter and car running check for at least 13.5 volts at battery. If not check fuses, big red wire from alternator to battery and for actual output of alternator at bolt where big red wire attaches to alternator. Should have battery voltage with car not running and at least 13.5 when engine is idling(motor running)

2003 Saturn vue V6- alternator- how many wires plug into the alternator and what color are they- thanks

Only two , both are red . One is a heavier gage wire that fastens on the stud on the back of the alternator , this wire comes from the starter an has a fusible link . The next wire is of a smaller gage an should be in a connector that plugs into the alternator , this wire comes from the ECM - engine control module . But both are red !

if battery and alternator are good. i would check the wire from alternator to battery, they sometimes have a fusable link in the wire, that burns out. also check fuse box there may be a fuse and it may be blown! at battery with car running should be at least, 14 to 14.2. at battery when car is off should be about 12.8 to 13 volts. have a good day !!

Not getting charge out of alternator and it is good alternator wiring seems to be in good shape what else could cause problem relays how can you tell if good

If you're not reading a charge(13+ volts)at the battery, but you have voltage output from the alternator. There are 2 fuseable links, 1 is in line with the red battery wire from the stud on the
alternator to the starter. This link can be bypassed by running a wire from the alt. stud to the pos+
post on the battery. The other fusable link is in line with the red stator wire from the regulator plug.
Check these links and repair or replace if needed. Hope this helps.

I always have to jump my car and it always have to be put in park or neutral when i stop at light

First clean the battery connections, charge the battery then have it tested at Auto zone or another parts store they usually do it for free if it's a bad battery replace, if not check the output of the alternator while the car is running. locate the alternator then locate the large wire comming out of the back it is usually red pull aside the rubber boot that covers the ring connector in order to touch the probe of a voltmeter to it, set the volt meter to 12 volts dc with the car running ground the black probe while touching the red probe to the output wire at alternator it should read 13 volt or higher but no higher than 14.5 if not replace the alternator.

How to check the alternator to see if it's charging on 2003 yukon the volt meter dose not move off of 9 volts

They have expensive tools and equipment to test alternators but you can get by with a simple digital volt meter. With the volt meter on DC voltage attach each lead to the corresponding terminals on the battery. With the engine running and all the electrical loads on (such as the head lights, radio, defrost, wipers, radio etc). the voltage reading should be between 13 and 14 volts. If you actually only have 9 volts then the alternator isn't charging and you'll have to look in to that more. The truck wouldn't be able to start or run very well with only 9 volts so i'd be willing to bet the gauge is bad or possibly a wiring fault.

82 olds tornado alternator

Make sure you test it at the alterantor..not just at the battery..Your battery is the 9 v..under a load..while car running..but you have a wire that should be running from your alternator to your mau be bad..Or if you have a external regulator, that could be the problem, but i doubt it for that vehicle...Check your harness for the alternator, and make sure you have that power wire running back to your battery from the alternator...
