Tachometer in 1991 Alfa spyder will not read more than 2000 RPM

The 91 Alfa spider has an electronic Tach. when the engine is running at far over 2000 RPM the tach will read no more than 2000. Today at 75 MPH it read 1500 RPM. It should have been around 3000 RPM. I can wind the engine up to about 5000 RPM and it Reads 2000-2500 RPM. There is a small 6"X6" inspection opening in shelf behind passengers seat containing electronic breakers which seems to be very warm and it hums when the engine is turned off. The humming starts and stops a couple of times before it finally stops. I wonder if this could have some connection to the tach problem.

  • pthomascars Apr 26, 2010

No shift setter, I think this is an electronic problem. I understand the tach is not mechanical and car may have a sending unit for the tach some where that may have a problem . Probably need an Alfa mechanic/expert trained in 91-94 cars.

No shift setter. Think this an electronic problem. Believe this electronic tach has a sending unit somewhere in the car with a bad connection or sending unit is on the fritz. think I need a mechanic especially trained in 91-94 Alfa Spiders.

Think I need an expert mechanic trained in late model (91-94) Alfas to answer this question

I suggest check air cleaner and exhaust for blockage like catalytic converter. Are you check for any OBD fault code?

The ECM commands the Bosch high-pressure fuel pump to deliver a specific fuel rail pressure - that can vary up to 23,000 psi depending on load and speed. The actual pressure is monitored via the fuel rail pressure sensor. If the fuel rail pressure varies more than desired or if commanded fuel pump flow is 100mm3/second or less, DTC P0089 will set.

Corrective action includes measuring the fuel rail pressure using a Tech II scan tool, then compare that to commanded fuel rail pressure with the engine running at 2000 rpm. The difference must be less than 20 Mpa. A blockage in the fuel tank or plugged fuel filter could cause this fault (excessive vacuum in fuel line). If there is less than 5 in Hg of vacuum when measured at the fuel pressure test port at 3000 rpm, the fuel pressure regulator could be defective, and may need to be replaced. The fuel pressure regulator (FPR) is a sub assembly located on the Bosch high-pressure fuel pump.

Check the lead on the negative side of the coil to see that it is in good shape, follow the lead for the tach off of the coil to the condenser, and by pass around it,the condenser maybe the problem.

Hi! Is there a shift setter on the tach? You may need to set it to your desired shifting manner. Its what restricts the tach from going over 2000 rpm. Once setted you'll be good. Hope this helps and have a good one!

Sorry...thought I had more information for your vehicle, but my internet connection for Alfa Romeo is down

However, assuming you know that your engine is actually running higher than 2000 rpms, means you have a voltage drop issue on the tach signal from your coil

assuming your vehicle actually cannot exceed 2000pms, then you might have an exhaust restriction

Macsry2k answer makes the the most trouble shooting sense. Problem is definitely electric. Since the alternator is where the RPM reading comes from, this is the best place to start. Good luck!

Maxda B4000 RPM skips 2000 to 5000

If you can actually hear the engine race up to 5000 RPM you may have a serious problem. But more then likely you cant actually hear the engine rev up. If this is the case I would suspect a bad Tachometer ground wire.

My car alfa romeo timing belt was cut and valves dameged , after replacing the timing belt and at 3000 rpm check engine comes on and the rpm slow done what is your point of view the problem

If you broke a timing belt while it was running you bent valves and the heads need to be worked on.You probably have a cylinder with no compresion and the computer is sensing it.

Car: Nissan Maxima SE 1997 tachometer broken

the dash voltage egulator probably went bad. First, check the battery & make sure you have 12 volts, not running. Check it again running & you should see about 14.5 volts. If that's good,I'd replace the guage assembly.

Defective tachometer and speedometer

Do the following:1)key in the ON position:remove the 7.5 gauge fuse.Tach needle should read "0:". 2)put it back,go on the engine and unplug the green plug on the igniter -the big one, with 5 or 6 wires on it.The needle on tach reading should be zero.If not you have a short circuit on the black wire between that plug and the plug on the conbination meter.3) If the reading is zero with the plug disconnected, the black wire for the tach is short-circuited inside the igniter.
