You are doing the right thing, it is a bad design, you have to wiggle the tabs as they have a "keyhole " slot and the locating pin has a groove that the tab slides in, if you pull too far or not central there will still be some tab in the groove so gently pull the lamp and wiggle the tab, side to side and up and down, the inside has 2 pins to make it harder!

Need to replace low beam headlight bulb

Hello,

it's easier to change the light bulbs in this car than in a lot of other vehicles. The 2008 pontiac Grand Prix uses separate bulbs for low beams and high beams. The low beams are located on the outer edge of the headlight assemblies while the high beams are located on the inner edge of the assemblies.
To replace the low beam of the headlight bulb You will be in need of these instruments(Soft blanket or towel, Latex gloves, 9006 replacement headlight (low beam)), please follow the steps below:
  1. Open the hood to the 2008 Pontiac Grand Prix after making sure the headlight switch is in the off position, and the keys are not in the ignition.
  2. Approach the headlight assembly with the spent headlight in it, and locate the retaining bracket (white) holding the assembly to the frame rail of the Grand Prix.
  3. Lift the retaining bracket up about a quarter of an inch in order to align the notches of the bracket to the riveted tabs on the frame.
  4. Pull the assembly forward away from the front of the car starting with the inner corner of the assembly toward the grill. Keep in mind the wire harness connection is still attached to the assembly, so only pull it far enough to reach behind and disconnect the plug located at the bottom of the assembly.
  5. Place the headlight and bulbs assembly lens down onto a soft towel or blanket.
  6. Disconnect the respective low beam or high beam wire harness.
  7. Turn the plastic base of the headlight counterclockwise a quarter turn to align the retaining tabs with the release notches. Remove the headlight from the headlight assembly.
  8. Put on latex gloves before handling the replacement low beam or high beam headlight. Oil from skin will compromise the life of the headlights if it contacts the glass bulb.
  9. Insert the new bulb into the assembly by aligning the retaining notches to the release tabs, and then turn the base of the headlight 1/4 clockwise to lock it into the headlight assembly. Reconnect the harness to the headlight.
  10. Bring the assembly back to the Grand Prix and reconnect the main wire harness at the bottom of the assembly.
  11. Align the guide pins at the back of the assembly to the locating holes in the front frame rail starting with the outer guide pin first and the inner (toward the grill) guide pin last. Lift the assembly upward while pushing back on the lens to push down on the retaining bracket.
  12. Place the key in the ignition and turn the key to accessory power.
Hope this helped. Thank You for using FixYa!!!

Trying to change right side low beam bulb 2005 grand prix

there are two L shaped metal rods/brackets that you pull out to remove the whole headlamp assy. dont touch the glass bulb with your hands. the oil from your hands can ruin the bulb or shorten the life.

How to remove headlight asembly on 2000 grand am

There is a black plastic cover under the hood, and right above the headlight. (A pain to remove, but necessary. Held on with black plastic button type fasteners.) Under the plastic, There are 2 metal tabs, (1 on either side.) These are supposed to be "easy" release clips lol. Pull them up, and the headlight assembly can come out the front of the car. Replace the bulb, and reverse procedure to reinstall.
Good luck and thank you for using Fixya

Can't figure out how to change the passenger side headlight

On most new cars theres 2 tabs (made of sheet metal, 1 inch wide, bent 90 degrees) on each headlight that you pull up and it will release the headlight. im not completley sure on Grand Prix's but if there are no tabs then look for 10mm sheet metal bolts going through the upper radiator support above your headlights. those should release the headlight if there are no tabs.

Hope this helps!

Replacing headlight

Composite Headlights
Most of the vehicles covered by this manual are equipped with composite headlight assemblies. Due to space constraints, no access may be provided to withdraw the bulbs, so the replacement usually requires removal of the composite assembly.

CAUTION The composite headlight assemblies use Halogen bulbs which contain a gas under pressure. Improper handling of the bulb could cause it to shatter into flying glass fragments. To help avoid personal injury, follow the precautions closely.

Whenever handling a Halogen bulb, ALWAYS follow these precautions:
  • Turn the headlight switch OFF and allow the bulb to cool before changing it. Leave the switch OFF until the change is complete.
  • ALWAYS wear eye protection when changing a halogen bulb.
  • Handle the bulb only by its base. Avoid touching the glass.
  • DO NOT drop or scratch the bulb.
  • Keep dirt and moisture off the bulb.
  • Place the used bulb in the new bulb's carton and dispose of it properly.
  1. Raise the hood and locate the bulb mounting location at the rear of the composite headlamp body.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  3. If necessary for access, remove the splash shield or side marker lamp(s).
  4. On some models it may be necessary to remove the side marker lamp.

  1. If there is enough room to access the plastic base, press in and turn the base 1/4 turn counterclockwise and remove from the metal retaining ring by gently pulling back and away from the headlight. Remove the electrical connector from the bulb by raising the lock tab and pulling the connector down and away from the bulb's plastic base.
  2. If you can't access the bulb from the engine compartment, unfasten the thumb screws, and/or other retainers, then pull the composite headlight assembly forward slightly and disengage the wiring connector. Press in and turn the base 1/4 turn counterclockwise and remove the bulb from the metal retaining ring by gently pulling back and away from the headlight.

To install:
  1. Attach the electrical connector on the new bulb's plastic base making sure that the lock tab is in place.
  2. Install the bulb by inserting the smallest tab located on top of the plastic base into the corresponding notch in the metal retaining ring. Turn clockwise 1/4 turn until it stops. The small plastic tab should be at the top of the metal ring.
  3. Install the composite headlight assembly, then secure with the retainers.
  4. Connect the negative battery cable, then check for proper headlight operation.
