Where do the vacuum hoses go from the control panel to find a leak in a 1999 Dodge pickup air conditioning system.

First ... Make sure that you have vacuum to your control head. This is normally the black vacuum line. The vacuum than goes to the various vacuum motors on the Heater /AC case. These vacuum motors rarely fail. The normal fault is loss of engine vacuum ..cut line or not secure to engine. second.. a fault with the vacuum reserve reseviour. When the engine needs the vacuum this is your vacuum supply.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Drain the engine coolant into a suitable container. CAUTION
    When draining engine coolant, keep in mind that cats and dogs are attracted to ethylene glycol antifreeze and could drink any that is left in an uncovered container or in puddles on the ground. This will prove fatal in sufficient quantity. Always drain coolant into a sealable container. Coolant should be reused unless it is contaminated or is several years old.
  3. Disconnect the heater hoses. Be careful not to damage the core by pulling on the hose to remove. Cut the hoses if they will not come off easily.
  4. Remove the instrument panel.
  5. Disconnect the resistor assembly.
  6. If possible, disconnect and move the duct (non air conditioning) or the evaporator housing (air conditioning) to the right to gain clearance for the heater unit. If equipped with air conditioning, do not disconnect air conditioning system until absolutely necessary. Refer to Section 1 for discharging, evacuating and recharging the system.
  7. Remove the instrument panel stay and heater unit.
  8. Disassemble the heater unit by removing the duct, mode control case, core assembly and heater core. To install:
  9. Assemble the heater unit by installing the duct, mode control case, core assembly and heater core.
  10. Install the heater unit and instrument panel stay.
  11. Connect the duct (non air conditioning) or the evaporator housing (air conditioning) to the heater unit. Evacuate and recharge the air conditioning system if the system was discharged to remove the evaporator assembly.
  12. Connect the resistor assembly.
  13. Install the instrument panel as outlined in this section.
  14. Connect the heater hoses. Be careful not to damage the core by pulling on the hose.
  15. Refill the engine coolant into a suitable container.
  16. Connect the negative battery cable and check for leaks.

Check the hoses to the heater core and make sure they aren't deteriorated. Also, it might be worthwhile to clean and flush the cooling system.

It's possible there is a problem in the controls for the air conditioning system, too. The various valves in the ducts are vacuum controlled, and if a leak develops, it's possible that cold air is being mixed with the heated air.

check for loose or faulty electrical connections at distributor,coil,or alternator. Fault in fuel or electrical systems. Vacuum leak at gasket surfaces of intake manifold or throttle body. Make sure all mounting bolts/nuts are tightened securely and all vacuum hoses connected to the manifold are positioned properly and in good condition

Check the condition/operation of the PCV valve and associated vacuum/vent connections.
Check for air leaks on the air intake system - throttle body, air cleaner connections etc.
Check for any other vacuum leaks on the motor intake system - such as brake booster hose etc.

1998 Chevy S10 pickup air condition compres is on instead of heat


First be sure that you do not have the controls set to defrost the windows since on just about all vehicles nowadays with the controls set that way the air conditioner will be turned on...even if it is not so warm outside. So...be sure that you do not have any of the controls set to defrost and that the heater is turned all the way on.

It sounds like though that the control for the vents is not operating properly. This is a combination of mechanical movements of the vent flaps and small "air motors" that operate the flaps. These air units are controlled by air vacuum taken from the engine compartment through tiny hoses. If the hoses get cracks, holes or come loose from their fittings then your vents will not move correctly so it is a matter of looking and tracing each one of the hoses to make sure they are fastened correctly, have not come loose and are not cracked or leaking. The problem can even be in the engine compartment where the hose(s) connect to the engine vacuum system...so it will take lots of looking carefully with flashlights etc....good luck.

Heating / air conditioning control stuck to front defrost vents


There is a vacuum leak under the hood. Find the vacuum line on the passenger side where it comes through the firewall and follow it to the engine. You system needs vacuum to operate and without it the default setting is on defrost for safety reasons.

Need to replace the heater core in a 1995 Dodge Grand Caravan SE


1991-95 Models
  1. Disable the air bag system by disconnecting the negative battery cable.
  2. Have the system discharged by a qualified professional mechanic using an approved recovery/recycling machine.
  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4. Remove the steering column cover and left and right side under panel silencers.
  5. Remove the center bezel by unclipping it from the instrument panel.
  6. Remove the accessory switch carrier and the heater/air conditioning control head.
  7. Remove storage bin and lower right instrument panel.
  8. Disconnect the blower motor lead under the right side of the instrument panel.
  9. Remove the right side 40-way connector wiring bracket.
  10. Remove the lower right reinforcement, body computer bracket and mid-to-lower reinforcement as an assembly.
  11. Disconnect the vacuum lines at the brake booster and water valve.
  12. Clamp off the heater hoses near the heater core and remove the hoses from the core tubes. Plug the hose ends and the core tubes to prevent spillage of coolant.
  13. If equipped with air conditioning, remove the H-valve and condensation tube.
  14. Disconnect the temperature control cable and vacuum harness at the connection at the top of the unit.
  15. Remove the retaining nuts from the package mounting studs at the firewall. Disconnect the hanger strap from the package and rotate it aside.

To install:
  1. Remove the temperature control door from the unit and clean the unit out with solvent. Lubricate the lower pivot rod and its well and install. Wrap the heater core and/or evaporator with foam tape and place in position. Secure with the screws.
  2. Assemble the unit, making sure all vacuum tubes are properly routed.
  3. Install the assembly to the vehicle and connect the vacuum harness. Install the nuts to the firewall and install the condensation tube. Fold the carpeting back into position.
  4. Connect the hanger strap from the package and rotate it aside. Install the 2 brackets supporting the lower edge of the heater housing. Connect the blower motor wiring, resistor wiring and the temperature control cable.
  5. Install the retaining screws from the right side to the steering column. Install the instrument panel trim covering and reinforcement.
  6. Assemble the unit, making sure all vacuum tubes are properly routed.
  7. Install the assembly to the vehicle and connect the vacuum harness. Install the nuts to the firewall and install the condensation tube. Fold the carpeting back into position.
  8. Connect the hanger strap from the package and rotate it aside. Connect the blower motor wiring and temperature control cable.
  9. Install the lower right reinforcement, body computer bracket and mid-to-lower reinforcement as an assembly.
  10. Install the right side 40-way connector wiring bracket.
  11. Install the lower right instrument panel and storage bin.
  12. Install the heater/air conditioning control head and accessory switch carrier.
  13. Install the center bezel to the instrument panel.
  14. Install the under panel silencers and steering column cover.
  15. Install the vacuum lines at the brake booster and water valve.
  16. Connect the heater hoses to the core tubes.
  17. Using new gaskets, install the H-valve and connect the refrigerant lines. Install the condensation tube.
  18. Have the system evacuated and recharged by a qualified professional mechanic, utilizing the proper equipment. Add 2 fl. oz. (59 ml) of refrigerant oil during the recharge. Fill the cooling system.
  19. Perform the Air Bag System Check procedures outlined in this section before connecting the negative battery cable.
  20. Connect the negative battery cable and check the entire climate control system for proper operation and leaks.

Code p1131 on a 1999 mercury cougar


Lack of HO2S-11 Switch, Indicates Lean.Right bank front 02 sensor. When an HO2S sensor indicates lean at the end of a test, the system is trying to correct for an over-lean condition. The code is set when the fuel control system no longer detects switching for a calibrated amount of time.In other words the 02 sensor is indicating lean and the fuel trim has reached the programed limit trying to correct it.
There are many things that could cause this like a bad 02 sensor,a vacuum leak,a leaking or contaminated fuel injector/s,a stuck open PCV valve,leak in hose between MAF sensor and engine causing un-metered or unmeasured air entering the engine,exhaust leak,improperly seated oil dipstick,stuck EGR valve.
Check PCV valve first if it is stuck open if you pull the hose off of the valve cover that hooks to the air tube between MAF and engine you will feel a strong vacuum pull there,normal you would hardly feel it.

Hi! jhr1992 You need to get the vacuum system checked. The A/C is controlled by engine vacuum. Make sure the vacuum hoses are connected under the hood expecialy the one feeding through the fire wall to the AC Control. You should not hear any vacuum leak sound from under the dash. Sometimes you need to pull the control and just do some repair or replacement.
