Agreed as above. The car is not earthed correctly. Remove the wires again, get a wire brush and clean them up. Replace and cover the ends in petroleum jelly.

The negative cable can have two wires a thick one to the engine and a smaller one to the body, sounds like the smaller one is not contacting
