Instructions

  1. Step 1 Turn the engine off and open the hood. If you plan on removing the EGR valve, let the engine cool for about 45 minutes.
  2. Step 2 Locate the air intake assembly on the driver's side of the engine bayWhere do I find the EGR Pressure Sensor on a 1998 - 2_bing.gif (shaped like a black breadbox). Trace the hose from the air intake to the rear of the engine bay.
  3. Step 3 Examine the area to find the EGR valve. The valve is mounted next to the manifold, slightly off-center on the backside of the engine bay.

Does a 1996 mercury sable and 2001 ford taurus have the same engine

Its possible. In this time span Ford used two different motors, the overhead valve (OHV) Vulcan V6, and the Duratec 24V V6, which will bear the 24v DOHC badge on the front fender.

Shaun just answered my question on a thermostat change on a 3.0 in my 1998 Taurus. Is the answer the same if it is the 24V DOHC?

Hi, this is Shaun again. The answer is the same for a 24v DOHC. Coolant systems are pretty simple and haven't evolved much with different vehicles and motors. It's pretty much the same process with all vehicles.

1998 taurus 24v engine code p401-- what is most common fix?

DTC P0401 - Insufficient EGR Flow

EGR stands for Exhaust Gas Recirculation. It is part of the vehicle emmissions system, and is used to reduce combustion temperature and pressure to control Oxides of Nitrogen. There are generally three parts to the EGR system: the EGR valve, an actuator solenoid, and a differential pressure sensor EGR (DPFE). These things work together to deliver the correct amount of recirculation based on engine temperature, load, etc. The P0401 code means that OBD detected an insufficient amount of EGR.

Symptoms: You may notice drivability problems such as pinging (a.k.a. pre-ignition knock) when the engine is under load or the vehicle is at higher speeds. There may also be other symptoms.

Causes: A code P0401 most likely means one or more of the following has happened:
* The DPFE (differential pressure feedback EGR) sensor is faulty and needs to be replaced
* There is a blockage in the EGR (tube), most likely carbon buildup
* The EGR valve is faulty
* The EGR valve may not be opening due to a lack of vaccuum

Possible Solutions: In fixing this code, it is quite common for people to just replace the EGR valve only to have the OBD code return. The EGR valve is not always the culprit.
* Use a vacuum pump and pull the EGR valve open while monitoring engine RPM's & DPFE voltage. There should be a noticable difference in RPM's with the EGR open
* Clean out the EGR valve and/or tubing to remove deposits
* Check the voltage at the DPFE, compare to specified values (refer to a repair manual for your specific model)
* Replace the DPFE sensor (with a good quality / OEM one)
* Replace the EGR valve

hope this helps (remeber to rate this answer).

Where is the DPFE Sensor located on a 2003 Ford Taurus 3.0 L 24V engine? Husband can't locate it! Can't find diagram for 2003 Taurus.

That is the (Differential Pressure Feedback Exhaust) - e.g. EGR Valve. You shouldn't have any trouble finding it. There is usually a metal tube from the exhaust manifold going to it,as well as one or two vacuum hoses.
It has to also, direct exhaust gas into the intake,so there is your key.

Where is the oil sending unit on a 1996 ford taurus 3.0 liter engine located? glenn

On 3.0L OHV engines, the oil pressure sensor is located on the left side of the engine block above the flywheel. On 3.0L DOHC engines the sensor is located on the left side of the engine block above the oil filter. On 3.4L DOHC engines the sensor is screwed into the oil filter adapter. The oil pressure sensor operates the oil pressure warning lamp.
