Most likely the reverse part of the transmission has gone bad. It will need to be overhauled.

1991 chevy pickup automatic no reverse why there is no reverse gear

Occasionally a person can have good results by checking for low transmission fluid levels or by changing the tranny fluid and filter. However, I am sorry to say, losing reverse gear USUALLY means it is time to get a new transmission. If you are on a tight budget, you can always dedicate a day or two to removing it, and put in a used one from a wrecking yard.

I have a 1978, 2wd, old chevy pickup with a 305 engine in it. It has a automatic transmission. It recently has not been wanting to shift into reverse. Any help?

I'm assuming that you checked the fluid and it's full. If the fluid was low and you had to top it up, did you run the tranny through the gears, stopping at each gear for a couple seconds? Do this a couple times, down and up. When was the last time you changed the fluid and filter, every 80-100,000 miles.
Check that the vacuum is good to the modulator valve, round thing at top rear on passenger side of transmission. Remove it and tip it down, if any oil comes out replace it.
You could try adding some Lucas Trans Treatment. If this helps, you are looking for a rebuild or another transmission in the reasonably near future. Read the instructions on the back of the bottle.

Why wont the reverse lights work on a 1997 chevy s-10 truck? I have changed the bulbs and checked the fuses, still no reverse lights

Have a look for a reverse switch on the gear box, it may have a wire off or the switch is not working. Check for power at the lights when in reverse.

Reverse went out on 1978 Chevy pickup

Nothing. Also it will be much cheaper to find a used matching transmission with low (less than 80k miles) than having a shop rebuild the old one. In most cases the used transmission will far outlast the rebuilt one. Check on the web by Googling "used transmissions".

Chevy Transmission problems

First thing is to read out, with a rented scanner, whatever codes the computer is storing instead of just replacing parts. You didn't say whether the transmission is automatic or manual--there are different troubleshooting procedures for each type. Is the shift a floor or column type?

if all other gears work fine then it's just a matter of changing out the solenoid that controls that gear you will save quite a bit of cash you don't have to change the whole transmission

It has a bad Low/Reverse Clutch or a bad Reverse Input Clutch, Either way it will need rebuilt to fix.
