Sounds like a bad switch on the tailgate. Open your tailgate and look for a switch. When you find it...press it in completely and see if the sensor light goes off. If so, replace it.
I do not think your daughter pressing the lock has caused the problem but you never know ? try unlocking it with the key if it hass a external lock ,it it hasnt then you will need to clamber in the back and unbolt the body hasp if this is possible if not you will have to remove the rear panel on the tailgate and open it that way ,its possible that the cables in the rubber shroud have broke at this instance as the tailgate was closed .Difficult to say without a good look and a play so if you cannot get it to open with the key then consult a local mechanic to have a look for you .
Hello, If you are talking about a hard cover, what you need to do is open the tailgate and look at the underside of the cover. You should see some contact pads on top of threaded shafts. These contact pads need to be adjusted to allow for the locking mechanism to work.
The lid must go down far enough for the lock cables(rods) to expand and secure the lid. You may need some Torx or Allen-headed sockets to turn the parts. With the tailgate open, you can see what needs to be done. You might want to check any Bed mounts you can see as they may have loosened up.
The side locks of the Bed require just the right amount of length in the Horizontal lock rods. If they are too long, you will never get the lid open with the handle once you close it. I hope my Solution is very helpful to you.
First thing: Try using the key to move to the locked and then to the unlocked position. If this works, open the tailgate... This also pretty much tells you what the root cause problem is, which is a pressed-in plastic post working its way out (see below).
If no bedliner, just remove metal plate inside tailgate and actuate by hand inside to open. If bedliner, first use a small screwdriver to carefully (don't scratch paint) push in latches at either side of tailgate to open/lower tailgate (if locking/unlocking as above did not work to lower gate and gain access). Next, use two blade screwdrivers to pry out the "buttons" that hold the ends of the tailgate liner where they wrap around the sides, then remove bedliner piece and metal plate, etc.
Once you have access to inside of tailgate, you will see how the mechanism works by pulling up and down on the handle while observing. You will probably find that the slide mechism that locks and unlocks the mechanism has been allowed to move such that it cannot unlock/allow movement of the latching mechanism. This is usually the result of the pressed in plastic anchor being worn/loose. I had some success with cleaning thoroughly with alcohol or brake cleaner, allowing to dry and then using super glue to hold it firmly in all the way. Still have to hold handle up when closing gate and keep key on hand to unlock every time opening, but it was a free repair...
not sure what you mean by "sealed unit". if your problem is that your tailgate wont latch together properly, check the condition of the tailgate cables and look for damage to the outer covering and cable itself. it could be that the cable is getting caught b/w gate and bed when you close it. due to a misalignment. yes, i would lubricate the mechanisms with wd40, or a quality graphite lubricant. i would also access the internal mechanisms that actuate the tailgate opening. lubricate those parts too. finally make sure that the cable's tang is slid past on the bolt. this should fix your issues.
remove the tailgate handle trim cover, disconnect handle from side that's not working & pull on rod manually. ( thats if it's not broken already) You have probably broken rod from handel.
